The Olympic Oval suffered a significant mechanical failure in September 2020. In December 2020, we provided all stakeholders with an update stating that the earliest we could expect to have ice in the Olympic Oval would be late May 2021. Today, we wanted to provide you with an update on the replacement equipment delivery schedule. We have received notification from our supply partners that the estimated arrival date for the equipment mentioned above will be early April 2021. Upon arrival, we will need to install and test the equipment. Assuming the equipment testing is successful, we estimate that we will be on track to meet the late May 2021 timeline. Speed Skating Canada has announced its LONG TRACK TEAM for the World Cup Speed Skating bubble in Heerenveen, Netherlands . The World Cup begins next week on Friday, January 22, 2021 and will be LIVE STREAMED on CBC Sports.

Perhaps some of you have been following 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games updates - but in case you haven’t this is a great video about the development and construction of the ICE RIBBON for the long track speed skating events! The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games will be held from Feb 4 - 20, 2022.

Update: November 24 Today the provincial government announced a state of public health emergency and mandatory measures to address the rising cases of COVID-19. The Olympic Oval will be reviewing these recommendations and will be providing updates in the coming days.

23 years ago TODAY, CATRIONA LE MAY DOAN set the 500m LONG TRACK SPEED SKATING RECORD for the first time and became the first woman to break the 38-second barrier with her time of 37.90s at the Olympic Oval - a special thanks to TEAM CANADA for posting this today!

Important update: NOVEMBER 19, 2020 The Olympic Oval has been notified of a positive case of COVID-19 within the speed skating community. We are taking precautionary measures to cease all speed skating training from today, November 19, until December 2 at the earliest. The Oval continues to be open for approved user groups. We will notify you when Oval Program training will re-commence. In the meantime, we ask that you continue to adhere to all provincial and University of Calgary safety guidelines.
