Collective Suspension Over the past months, everything has been thrown up into the air. It is still not clear if we are rising or falling. From our new perspective, however, we have a different vantage point that exposes the structural issues within many of our systems. It is also unclear how these pieces will land, making the future uncertain. Being in collective suspension has the potential to wipe clean how we might have projected the future to unfold. Free of the dogma of... our individual future visions, now is a time for radical change wherein we can conceive of the future we want collectively. This post is part of the #engagedinplace series that explores the impacts of the double crisis of the global pandemic and racial reckoning through the lens of publicly engaged design. Each participant has been asked to reflect on one of the three themes including public, engagement, and design and how we are rethinking publicly engaged design through this moment. This effort has been inspired by the #urbanismbeyonddcorona series as well as the many thoughtful responses to these unfolding crisis that have occurred over the last several months. The interlinked crises of climate breakdown, biodiversity loss, and societal inequity are the most serious issues of our time. Buildings and construction play a major part, accounting for nearly 40% of energy-related carbon d...ioxide (C02) emissions while also having a significant impact on deforestation, habitat destruction, and species extinction. Meeting the needs of our society without breaching the earth's ecological boundaries demands a paradigm shift in our behavior in the building sector. Together with our clients and collaborators, we must design buildings, cities, and infrastructures as indivisible components of a larger, constantly regenerating, and self-sustaining system. The knowledge exists to begin that transformation now, but what has been lacking is collective will. As a sector, we must work together to reshape our approach to architecture and urbanism at the speed and scale the crises demand. We hope that every US architectural practice will join us in making this commitment.
