Some thoughts from the Artistic Director of the Guthrie Theatre. His sentiment rings true for all of us in the theatre community.

Sorry to hear about the passing of an old friend of the Guild... On behalf of the Players' Guild of Hamilton, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Jack Brokenshire shared some fond memories: Bill was introduced to the Guild by Willard Boudreau back in the 1991-1992 season during the production of Mother Courage in which Bill designed and built a covered wagon that had to roll on stage as well as be turned 360 degrees by an actor, and as I recall the... stage was raked. While I was in the audience on opening night and knowing the technology required to build this covered wagon, I could not take my eyes off of this piece of the set. I could not wait to introduce myself to this man, knowing he possessed these talents. Talents that we could certainly use in building future sets and so began my working closely with Bill during many Guild stage productions. In those days, the Guild had 5 or 6 talented set building individuals. Bill and I teamed with them to piece together many Guild sets, take them apart, load them into a truck or two, to be reassembled at Sir John A. High School. I might add that some of these sets were two stories high with multiple working doors, with a few on wheels so the set could be turned while on stage as well. Bill was a major set-building team player who always added to the overall final product. During those days, the one thing I remember about Bill was anything he worked on always had to be perfect as "good enough" was never in his vocabulary. I particularly remember whenever Bill assembled a door on the stage with proper hinges, door stops, door handles and catches, his test of the final assembly included slamming the door shut. If it stayed closed, and the set didn't shake, it was a perfect assembly and would not interfere with any on-stage actions during a performance. Bill also acted as the Master Carpenter on many Guild productions, while heading the set building team and overseeing the final minute details. Bill's talents and technical skills were undoubtedly missed at the Guild when he and his wife Diane Melody moved from Hamilton to retire in Gibsons BC in the late 1990s.

The lawn sign now contains some healthy reminders for our present situation, and a promise for the future from the Players’ Guild of Hamilton.

This is the sign outside the Players’ Guild of Hamilton... a sad little sign at the moment, but leaving a lot of room at the top for when we beat this virus, and roar back into action. Do your bit to flatten the curve. Theatre will resume after this interlude.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, we regret to announce that we are cancelling the remainder of our 2019/2020 season which includes "THIRD" and "VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE". We struggled with the tough decision to cancel even one show, but having to cancel two made the decision that much more difficult. As theatre people we live by the motto, "the show must go on," however in light of the current and anticipated impact of COVID-19, we want to ensure the health and saf...ety of our valued patrons and members while doing our part to help contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus. We are hopeful that we will be performing and enjoying theatre together again very soon. Like all of you, we will take this one week at a time. Ticket holders for "Third" have been contacted and provided with the following options: * Credit for use toward a show in our 2020/2021 season * A tax receipt for a donation in the amount of your ticket purchase * Exchange your tickets for an alternate show * Receive a refund Ticket holders for "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike" will be contacted by our Box Office staff in the near future and will be offered the same options. We will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves and will provide updates on our website and via email. Thank you for your understanding and continued support of The Players' Guild of Hamilton, Inc., during these unique circumstances.
