Dear Southlands neighbours: I want to introduce you to Cora, who is one of the participants in the STaRS (Southlands Therapeutic Riding Association) program. Cora has cerebral palsy, which means that she is normally confined to a wheelchair or other supportive apparatus. Her weekly STaRS riding lessons have given her improved strength, but more importantly, a sense of joy and confidence. She loves to laugh and chat with her wonderful instructor and volunteers and enjoys th...e sense of community that STaRS provides. I am sure you have noticed that you don’t see us on the roads in the neighbourhood right now! Due to the COVID-19 crisis, STaRS is currently not operating. However, once we have permission from the public health officials, we would like to resume operations as soon as possible. Not only do we want to see STaRS participants back on their horses, but we would also very much like to offer the program to as many children and adults from our lengthy waiting list as possible. STaRS’ survival relies on donations and its core group of dedicated volunteers. We have had to postpone our annual fundraiser, the June STaRS run/walk. We are therefore making an emergency appeal to you, our neighbours, to support us so that we can support others. We understand that this is a very unusual and difficult time for all of us, but we hope that you will consider donating to STaRS now at 6767 Balaclava St., Vancouver, BC, V6N 1R7 or through CanadaHelps https://www.therapywithhorses.ca/donate.
