Reading the same story over and over again might feel a bit boring to you, but children LOVE the repetition of a familiar tale. Make it interesting with silly voices, hand gestures and sound effects. These little bits of flourish help your little one understand new vocabulary and sentence structure. And they help you stay engaged while reading that book for the 894th time, too. #thereadingschool #raisingreaders #earlyliteracy #earlyreading

Save and practice together! These High Frequency Words - or #sightwords - are usually mastered by grade 2-3. A few tips from our Founder & Director, Diane Duff: Start with one or two and practice until they are known on sight.... Sight words shouldn't be sounded out. They should be recognized almost instantly when mastered. Turn off distraction and go slowly. Does your little one know these words? #thereadingschool #highfrequencywords #beginnerreading #earlyreading #earlyyears #gradeone #gradetwo #gradethree #dyslexia #structuredliteracy #ortongillingham #raisingreaders See more

"Our son was diagnosed at age 6 with ADHD and a reading disability. He is also a charmer who was very good at manipulating the situation to hide his disability. The neuropsychologist recommended tutoring. I found The Reading School and provided the assessment for Diane, who explained that our son has dyslexia and how best to help him. At at this time he could not recognize letters or distinguish letters from numbers. His confidence grew weekly, working with The Reading School..., and within 6 months he was reading simple words and sentences." - Debbie Mullins, Ottawa, Canada Our in-depth Functional Literacy Assessments can help you advocate for your child's unique needs at school. @TheReadingSchool link in bio to learn more and contact us about your child's learning journey. #thereadingschool #literacymatters #dyslexia #learningstyles #learndifferent #raisingreaders

Why not share this with your kids!?! Children who have trouble reading often miss out on real-world knowledge and vocabulary that we teachers assume they're gaining from books. My students love it when I stop a lesson to 'show' them a new word or concept. #morethanonewaytolearn
ADHD/ADD is still not treated as a learning disability. And that bothers, because, all too often, children are blamed for 'misbehaving' when they are hampered by a neurological difference ~ and not an attitudinal problem. http://www.ldao.ca/introduction-to-ldsadhd/what-is-adhd/

Do we still have a bias against people who don't spell well? Does their difficulty matter in this new-age of education and technology? https://www.washingtonpost.com//era-spellcheck-autocorre/
