We believe that kids (and teens and parents too!) want to do well. If a child struggling, it’s our job to figure out what is impeding their success. What skills are they lagging? At Red Oak, we teach kids, teens and their parents the skills they need to be successful. #wecandothis #onlinesupport #elearning #education @theredoakcentre

A brain break is just what it sounds like a break from whatever kids are focusing on. Short brain breaks during work time have been shown to have real benefits. They reduce stress and frustration and increase attention and productivity. https://www.understood.org//brain-breaks-what-you-need-to- #brainbreak #mindfulness #therapy @theredoakcentre

"Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves. Doing yoga, children exercise, play, connect more deeply with the inner self, and develop an intimate relationship with the natural world that surrounds them. Yoga brings that marvelous inner light that all children have to the surface." Well said. We couldn't agree more!
OTs at Red Oak work with children who experience sensory processing challenges. We have had lots of questions recently about sensory diets. A sensory diet has nothing to do with food. Its a carefully designed series of physical activities and accommodations tailored to give each child the sensory input she needs. Sensory diets can be used as part of sensory integration therapy. Completing a sensory diet routine can help kids get into a just right state, which can help t...hem pay attention in school, learn new skills and socialize with other kids. #occupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapymonth #sensoryintegration
One of our favourite self regulation tools is a glitter jar. Watch this video to hear children talk about how they use the mindfulness tool of a glitter jar and breathing to help them calm down when they are upset https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVA2N6tX2cg Here are some instructions to make one with your child at home.
Our occupational therapists work with many children on developing self regulation skills. One of our favourite tools is the Zones of Regulation (http://zonesofregulation.com/index.html) which is a cognitive behavioral approach that categorizes different ways we feel and states of alertness we experience into four concrete colored zones. Here is an article to help us in understanding that all Zones (and emotional states) are okay.
Happy October and Occupational Therapy month!
