The Sewing Machine Factory 10.09.2020

This is the most SMF staff in one spot since the beginning of the pandemic! Ran into one another while getting asymptomatic covid tests after we all attended last Fridays protest. If you were there, highly suggest doing the online assessment and booking an appointment. The SMF will not be reopening during phase 2, but we definitely miss our community and look forward to when it will be safe for us to be back in the venue take care friends.

Hey folks. We have been on a bit of radio silence lately, as community support during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the recent ongoing protests against police brutality across the US and in Canada, is taking hold of our focus. It is important to take a hard stance against racism and police brutality and speak up for black lives, but as our social media is run by white folks, it's not our voices that are important right now. We are going to be taking time to listen and lea...rn from black and indigenous people in our community, and encourage others to do the same. Follow their accounts, read and share their content and uplift the voices of those most affected by racism + police violence in our communities. A reminder that the Blackout Tuesday campaign is flooding BLM hashtags on social media with black squares, making important information and donation links hard to find. Don't use the BLM hashtags if you are participating to ensure you are not erasing black voices or suppressing information. Just use the #BlackoutTuesday hashtag instead. We will be sharing resources as well as music and art from black and indigenous artists over the next few weeks, so stay tuned. Please stay safe, stay educated and take care of one another.

When The Debutantes asked us to think of our favourite Odd Wednesday moment for their 4th birthday, we just couldn't pick just one. It's been 4 years of hilarious skits and incredible experimental comedy performances, so we chose to remember it by some of the remnants left behind. A huge thank you to all the Debs and everyone who has contributed to making Odd Wednesday such a fun, inclusive and intensely weird experience. <3 Tab & Lucas... P.S: This video is absolutely a reflection of our 4 weeks in isolation.

Hey pals. It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our birthday week shows are going to be postponed. Due to ongoing concerns about covid-19, recent cancellations, and many performers being wary of performing in public spaces at this time, we decided it is in our communities best interests. We will be making decisions about future shows as the days go on. We ask if you have upcoming bookings with SMF, that you reach out to us and we can decide how to move forward as the ...scope of things in Alberta becomes more clear. Of course, it will be up to individuals what they feel is right for them. We respect any decisions promoters, bands and performers feel they need to make. Let's take it day by day. We hope that with a short time of care and vigilance, we will be able to be open in the weeks to come to make space for our community to come together. Remember to wash your hands, don't touch your face, stay home and isolate if you are feeling sick, and to take care of your friends and vulnerable community members. Please understand we are having a lot of traffic to our inbox right now, so we will get back to folks as soon as we are able. <3

Please stay tuned tomorrow for updates regarding events at The SMF. Sending everyone good vibes in these stressful times, give us some time to communicate with staff and ownership as well as check in with updated Alberta Health Services guidelines. We will get back to everyone as soon as we are able. Take care, Tab & Lucas
