When the kindergarten teacher asked my 6-year-old who he wanted to make his Father's Day gift for, without hesitation he said 'mom' Our reality is that I've been both mom and dad in our house since he was 2. For more than half his life, he has witnessed mom doing all the traditional 'mommy' things and 'daddy' things. While it's not always easy to have to fill both rolls, moments like these make me realize how much my kids recognize and acknowledge this out-of-the-ordinar...y roll I play. And hats off to his amazing teacher....who not only supported his request but changed his art project to reflect his wishes. She shared with me that it allowed for some great discussion within the classroom, how every family is different and how different is okay. Because the 'different' that makes up our little family is absolutely okay #thesingularparent #fathersday2019 #differentisgood

Today was a big day in this house. The broken wrist that happened just shy of five weeks ago was getting a follow-up x-ray with the potential to finally be free from this dreaded cast. Lots of preparing was needed because in the eyes of a nine-year-old, an extra week or two in a cast can feel like an eternity. But luck was on our side and the cast came off for the final time.....his wrist (and forearm) were finally free!! As we left the hospital (with a partially tanned... arm and a hand that still held its claw-like position) my oldest, who knew we had an hour before we had to get heading home, asked me if we could do something fun this afternoon. I immediately thought of all the things I could (and had planned) to get done in that hour....all of which were adult responsibilities and none of which were fun. But it was a beautiful day and I was having a rare one-on-one opportunity with my oldest. So adult responsibilities were put aside and fun (in the form of a paddle boat and some bird feed) was had. Because stuck in my head where words shared with me last week: nobody ever looks back on life and says they spent too much time with their kids. So that extra hour.....it was going to be all about me and him today #thesingularparent #momlife #lifewithboys #makingmemories

I barely had the words 'don't jump on that rock' out of my mouth when my oldest, running full-tilt down the rocky shore responded with.... 'I just can't help it mom; it's in my nature' Why yes buddy....you are 100% correct ... Stop resisting and just start doing......wise words taught by my nine-year-old #thesingularparent #naturetherapy #fromthemouthsofbabes
