Meet Angela. Angela was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Her wife, Katherine, is her primary care-partner. Angela has been waking up frequently in the night, a bit confused, and can’t seem to get back to sleep. Katherine is working full time from home, while doing her best to meet Angela’s needs. Angela and Katherine enjoy activities together in the day such as cooking and going for walks... but nighttime has become a stressful time for both of ...them. Tonight, Angela and Katherine use The Sleep Kit together. They set up a space in the living room and put the CD on low, and colour together for a while. Then they ask each other questions from the reflection booklet and learn some new things about each other. Katherine brushed Angela’s hair, and puts some essential oil on her temples and then does the same for herself. The Sleep Kit provided both care-partners the opportunity to relax, unwind, and enjoy each other’s company. Look how soundly Angela is sleeping tonight! #thesleepkit #acaringapproachtosleep #carepartners #sleep #relax #bedtime #snooze #alzheimers #dementia #routine See more

October is #smallbusinessmonth and I wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself, Eve, as the creator of The Sleep Kit! After working in long-term care for three years, I am passionate about offering alternatives to medications for persons living with dementia (PLWD). The Sleep Kit was an idea I came up with in my 4th year at St. Thomas university. I wanted to see how focused, intentional one-on-one social interaction could improve sleep quality for PWD. We had more th...an 80 people complete a 14-day study and we used Fitbits and Sleep diaries to record the results. To learn more, visit the research page on our website! The current pandemic has revealed some significant challenges in the long-term care setting. I am a strong believer in person-centred approaches and I can’t help but think there must be a better way to serve older persons in later life. The Sleep Kit is a small part of a much bigger picture. You can order The Sleep Kit on our website, link in bio. Or you can contact me for more info! I would love to hear from you. #thesleepkit #acaringapproachtosleep #holistic #personcentred #social #dementia #alzheimers #caregiving #carepartner #family #nursinghome #smallbusiness #canadianmade

Yesterday, the New Brunswick Nurses Union called for an inquiry into long-term care in NB. Their research found some shocking discoveries: 73% of RNs surveyed say resident care has declined in their home over the last 3-5 years 63% of RNs report that residents are not being assisted to use the washroom sometimes (32%) ; often (22%) or always (9%) This is unacceptable. Older adults in long-term care deserve better. We can do better. #longtermcarereform #thesleepkit #advocate #ageism #nursinghome #bettercare #dementia #alzheimers #accountability
