Is it PMS or PMDD? PMS is premenstrual syndrome, a common syndrome where people who menstruate experience changes in their mood, behaviors, and physical symptoms in a week or two before starting their period, and symptoms generally resolve when the period starts. PMS has been studied and can be present in 30-80% of people who menstruate and is a sign of hormonal imbalance. PMDD is premenstrual dysphoric disorder. This has the same distinct cyclical pattern and similar ph...ysical symptoms as PMS but is different because mood disturbance results in marked social or occupational impairment and can even result in loss of jobs or impact important relationships. 5 years cancer free I have thought a lot about what it means to be a cancer survivor...5 years ago today had my thyroid and 34 lymph nodes removed. I had papillary carcinoma that had spread to my lymph nodes...diagnosed just before my 28th birthday. These past 5 years have been an affirmation that the human body and psyche can bounce back from anything given the right nourishment, environment and continued support.... Cancer has blazed its way through the lives of those I love, respect and care deeply for and while I’m taking a moment to celebrate myself right now I never loose sight of what a gift this life really is. Let’s talk about low cortisol and what you need to know. After periods of prolonged stress, trauma, and nutrient depletion in the body your cortisol output can switch from elevated to low. Symptoms of low cortisol:... Extreme fatigue. Weight loss and decreased appetite. Salt cravings Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) Anxiety and irritability Muscle and joint pain Darkening of your skin (hyperpigmentation) Low blood pressure Low cortisol can be caused by many different things and even multiple things at once! Addison's disease- I’ve sent part for screenings from their Dutch results Chronic disease Low-calorie diets Intense workouts Nutritional deficiencies Chronic infections Sleep deprivation and much more Low cortisol levels and high cortisol levels require different types of support and nourishment for your HPA axis and adrenal glands but one thing they both require is more rest. Maybe you’re tired and anxious or maybe it’s your cortisol. Is this you? You struggle to get through the day, but have a second wind at night. You rely on caffeine to even function during the day.... You are gaining weight around your midsection and can’t seem to lose it. You are irritable, anxious and can’t get through a workout. These could all be signs that your cortisol is out of balance. Your cortisol should have a rhythm- rising in the morning upon waking and spiking a few hours into your day. By night time it should lower to get you relaxed and ready to sleep, as it lowers melatonin starts to rise and sweet dreams await you. This is often not the case with many of my clients. Stress, work, kids, family and many other underlying causes can confuse your body into pushing out more cortisol at the wrong times. When this happens for a prolonged period, it can lead to burnout. This causes cortisol to be low across the board. On the Dutch test, this shows up as a flatline, a trend I see way too often amongst entrepreneurs, A types, students, and busy professionals too. Dutch testing and assessing cortisol rhythm helps me get to the bottom of many symptoms that can cause downstream effects of my client's health. Let’s talk about elevated cortisol and what you need to know. You’re probably stressed, most of us are considering we are living in a digital age, through a pandemic, racial revolution and confusing times. Not to mention if you have kids, a job, bills...so basically we are all more stressed than ever before. We are currently spending 42% of our days behind screens that are messing with our natural hormone production & interrupting our sleep patterns. ... Happy Anniversary to my dreams coming true and rooting into this healing space @thesoulfulsproutstudio. One year ago today I sat here, keys in hands, rooting into my vision of creating a healing space where everyone could feel heard, seen, supported, and welcomed. On my own healing journey I sat on waiting rooms, operatories, and office that felt cold, sterile, and caused me to shut down. I felt misunderstood and broken at times. ... In those moments I planted my seed, I had a vision of a different kind of care in a warm space where folks could come and feel how I longed to feel. I would be their safe space to land, hold space, and support them. I would give back to others in this way. "The day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit. " Not sure who said this first but today it's most resonate as I celebrate one year (and serving a pandemic) with this incredible healing studio. Shout out to my #1 for helping me transform this into an oasis - it was a full gut job. I'm excited to watch her grow, hold more beautiful souls, and continue to support my community in all the ways. Progesterone Part 2 Progesterone is a hormone we don't mind having plenty of (unlike our friend oestrogen). If progesterone levels are low, we will usually see a few days of spotting before the period arrives or short luteal phases (typically less then 11 days) which will usually go hand in hand with shortened cycles. Progesterone isn't just vital for baby making & healthy cycles but also brain development, energy, mood & more! However, our old friend CORTISOL pops up... & will DECREASE PROGESTERONE levels (cortisol being a hormone that increases in response to stressors in your day to day life). Our bodies are smart, they are ancient bodies in a modern world. So when they perceive constant stress (even in low levels), they start thinking that the next famine could be around the corner and we are under attack. This sends a message to the ovaries that now wouldn't be a good time to bring a baby into the world! Nope. So it cuts off that vital progesterone and life force hormone. So what we can do? Make your body and mind feel safe. Send clear signals to your system that you are OKAY & not under threat. Make time in your day for stillness & prioritize calm. Whatever amount of time you can manage is fine, just keep it consistent. Hello meditation and reiki. Breathwork! Think about what makes you feel more YOU. What do you LOVE to do? Lay down on the earth. Unplug. What makes you feel truly relaxed & at peace? Lean into these things! Utilize them. Everyone will be different, but slowing down & stillness is for everyone & deeply nourishes our nervous system, hormones & fertility!
