Getting some clear coating done today... Chevy wheel is looking good
Awesome automotive art!
I shall dub today Sanday... as I spent 13 straight hours sanding these 4 wheels and prepped a rim blow wheel for upcoming repairs... Some days just fly by and this was one of them ... Jett (my helper) and I got to work at 10am and we just finished up at 11pm... She left the workshop only once for about an hour but came back again to sit on my shoulders and critique what I was doing but then stuck her wet nose in my ear and purred approvingly hahaha. Of course the best place to sleep was right in the middle of the workbench but I was able to work around her hahahaha
Like seriously! Is this the most Bitchin' Rod you've ever seen or WHAT??? It's so close to being done you can almost taste it. I'll post a ton more photos once it's complete so I can show off all the countless features Wilf designed and built himself... My Finkmobile is already best buds with the Bedford , probably because they come from the same Orange bloodline and they got to hang out and chat a few times over the last year... Building this steering wheel was such a fun, frustrating, challenging and ultimately creatively satisfying project and I can't think of a more understanding, supportive friend to work with than Wilf. You're the best buddy :)
A really good article on after market wheel and tire fitment on vintage vehicles...
Seen this Cool Hot Rod at White Oaks Friday night...
Start to finish on a 1970/71 E-body Cuda /Challengerstandard wood grain steering wheel... I've done scores of these wheels over the last 30 years but they're always fun and a challenge ... testing my concentration, skills and patience :)
Here is a 1966 Beaumont steering wheel that was in decent original condition but with several small cracks at the spoke/hub and spoke/rim junctions and shrinkage gaps by the metal clips on the rim, plus it was the wrong colour for the customers car.... but all those issues were rectified, the wheel turned out awesome and the customer was very happy with the results :)
Woo Hoo! 3000 likes! Thanks to all the car, truck, boat, tractor.... well anything that has a steering wheel on it fans. Stay tuned for more start to finish steering wheel posts and I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy out there :)
Just completed this 1960s Pontiac steering wheel for a customer in Saskatchewan. This Black and plastic wood grain turned out amazing and I cant wait to see it back in the owners car and being used for decades to come! www.stwheelz.com
Start to finish, before-during-after. The cracks were filled with resin and then the entire wheel was wrapped with carbon fiber cloth and more resin. The surface was sanded smooth, painted Black and then clear coated. The clear was sanded smooth, chrome bands installed and then the wood grain sections were base coated in tan and several coats of transparent brown were airbrushed on till the correct colour value was achieved. ... Next the wood grain was drawn on by hand using technical pens and finally the entire wheel got several more clear coats to bury and protect everything. Once set, the clear was wet sanded smooth and hand polished to a glass smooth finish. The clear over the wood grained sections was buffed down to a satin sheen that duplicates the factory look. Then I rub bees wax onto the surface and that softens the look of the wood grain and gives the rim a unique and inviting feel. :) The variance in the sheen's between the Black and wood sections of the wheel are the kind of details that really make my wheels stand out in a crowd and help the wheel become a focal point of any interior... The wheel was clear coated with Tamco HC-9500 because it's the most durable and workable clear I've ever used!
Start to finish on a 1968 Jeepster steering wheel with a colour change from White to Red. Tamco HC-9500 clear coat was used to seal and protect the wheel ... it will keep looking amazing because it''s the best clear coat on the market!
The apple blossoms come and go so quick! Good thing I got a few pictures, that evening it got windy and rained... and they were all gone. @ The Steering Wheel Guy
this was a very cool and challenging wheel to work on... Because it has 4 spokes, that adds a lot of extra work but the biggest challenge was the missing section of rim. I started out using a technique I developed many years ago and have applied to many wheels. This was to section a good portion of a plastic rim off a donor wheel and heating it so I could bend it to shapeand then go about using resin and carbon fiber cloth to make the final repairs... BUT! I came across a... very cool new product online and decided this was the perfect wheel to experiment on... :) This new product comes from England and is called Thermoworx, here is a link to their site... this stuff blew me away https://thermoworx.com/ it's easier to look at their site than for me to explain it here... This stuff can be used for so many purposes :) Anyway, check out the start to finish pictures and see how I used the Thermoworx to exactly recreate the missing section of rim on this wheel :) ... and of course the wheel is slathered in TAMCO HC-9500! ...and I finished another wheel tonight. This is for a pretty rare 68' Beaumont convertible... What a beauty! Here are the "Before' "During' and "After" photos... as with every wheel I only use Tamco HC-9500 clear coat :)
All I wanted to do was wet sand and polish this 67 Coronet wheel ... But Nooooooo... once again the freshly clean and open space I created became mysteriously occupied by the queen of the house... What was I to do? Work around her of course... Although it took longer than planned, the wheel turned out fantastic... glass smooth :)
Yes Im still open and going strong! Having stocked up with supplies before everything started getting locked down and being home based (basically social dist...ancing on a daily basis since 2001 lol) I can happily say Im still open for business. Packages are being shipped to and received from the USA as well as all over Canada. It might take a little longer than usually to get to a destination but everything is getting through. Id love to bring your cracked, crumbling steering wheel back to life so that when this medical pandemic is brought under control and everyone can get back to normality you can enjoy driving and showing your classic vehicle again. Thank you to all my previous, present and future customers its so awesome to share our passion for old cars, trucks and boats. Please feel free to contact me at: [email protected] to get pricing or ask questions you may have about any part of the process! With 30 years of experience I know youll be very satisfied with what I can do for you and your classic vehicle Thanks and I hope everyone stays healthy and safe! Doug Lepak The Steering Wheel Guy
Here's the wheel I did for an awesome customer in California. what a gorgeous car and can you imagine a more iconic place to live and drive a musclecar? Thanks for the photos Angel, it was great working with you on this project and I'm always thrilled to see my wheels back in the customers car and being enjoyed the way it was meant to be :)
The plan for this wheel was to turn it into a DeLuxe wood grain version from the more simple solid Blue model... Follow along as it goes through my unique process of repairing and refinishing wheels. When the customer brought me this wheel it was completely Blue and had been repaired before using epoxy putty... As you can see from the pictures, epoxy putty never works! At the very least you'll be able to see the cracks that were filled and at the worst, each crack will turn i...nto 2 cracks as the epoxy expands and contracts at different rates than the plastic the wheel is cast from. Anyway, as I started to strip down the wheel, it became clear that the previous repair and paint job was seriously lacking. The clear coat was peeling in many places and there were cracks reappearing everywhere on the wheel. As the paint was removed you can see that this was originally a White wheel. I removed all the epoxy putty which wasn't too hard as it tends to just fall out of the cracks because it's not really attached to anything. The empty cracks were then filled to the surface with resin and allowed to set. After sanding the resin smooth with the surface of the wheel I completely wrapped the wheel with carbon fibre cloth and a few more coats of resin. Once again, the resin was sanded smooth so I could proceed with the next step of painting the wood section of the wheel a brown to match the wood grain trim on the spoke cover. After that was the process of hand drawing new wood graining on the front half of the rim, followed by a few layers of clear coat. After the clear coat set I sanded the surface so I could apply some chrome stripes on the inside and outside of the rim. The chrome stripes and wood grain front of the rim were then masked off so I could paint the back of the wheel the proper Blue to match the center spoke cover. After unmasking, it was back in the spray booth to bury everything under a few more coats of RM brand clear acrylic urethane! Once the clear set, I masked off the Blue portion of the wheel and buffed down the sheen of the clear over the wood grain and chrome stripes to match the original factory look. The wheel turned out great and I can't wait to see it back in the customers awesome Mustang! :)
I think I need a new watch! <3 Checking their page it seems they're so popular that they are sold out as of right now... :( https://www.hasznalt-ora.hu//elado-lada-km-h-szamlapu-kar/
