Who must we thank for the Thanksgiving holiday in our calendar? In Canada, the Parliament selected the second Monday of October in 1957. But it was celebrated in Canada since the early 1800's, sometimes at very different dates. Some historians found evidence that New-France Governor Champlain celebrated it as soon as 1606, inspired by First Nations rituals for harvest in Fall. In Ancient History, this tradition could have been inspired by Hebraic tradition of Soukkhot, mentioned in the Torah. Or by the Greek tradition of Thesmophoria in October, in honour of Demeter, the goddess of Agriculture. That makes a lot of people to thank! :)
