A sad anniversary, but an anniversary nonetheless. Hopefully society has gained some insight 61 years after this tragedy.

We received a Socratic tribute from Derick in Austin TX recently. Instead of drinking hemlock (conium maculatum), the drink that Socrates was sentenced to death with in 399 BC for allegedly 'corrupting the youth,' these fellas opted for Lonestar instead!

Do Turtles Dream of PKD? May 19th, 1965, exactly 50 years ago today, the nearly 200 year old Tui Malila kicked off to the next dimension. It must have triggered something in Philip K Dicks brain because he started off his famous novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (aka 'Bladerunner' to those of you that have probably seen the movie) with a Reuters excerpt commemorating the ancient creature. AUCKLAND... A TURTLE WHICH EXPLORER CAPTAIN COOK GAVE TO THE KING OF TONGA IN 1777 DIED YESTERDAY. IT WAS NEARLY 200 YEARS OLD. THE ANIMAL, CALLED TUIMALILA, DIED AT THE ROYAL PALACE GROUND IN THE TONGAN CAPITAL OF NUKU, ALOFA. THE PEOPLE OF TONGA REGARDED THE ANIMAL AS A CHIEF AND SPECIAL KEEPERS WERE APPOINTED TO LOOK AFTER IT. IT WAS BLINDED IN A BUSH FIRE A FEW YEARS AGO. TONGA RADIO SAID TUIMALILAS CARCASS WOULD BE SENT TO THE AUCKLAND MUSEUM IN NEW ZEALAND. Reuters, 1966 http://bit.ly/1vD0KZj

He was one of the most outspoken and contrarian philosophers of the 20th century. He was blacklisted from Universities and even thrown in prison for defending the rights of conscientious objectors in times of warmongering insanity ranging from WW1 throughout the Cold War. His unwavering search for logic and his incessant questioning of mankinds propensity for clubbing each other to death and the worship of fictional deities put him way ahead of his time. Our species needed his voice then and could most certainly use it now. So for this we say Happy Birthday Bertrand Russell! #BertrandRussell #AntiWar #CriticalThinking

On this day 191 years ago Beethovens "Symphony No. 9" first premiered in Vienna. It was his first on stage appearance in 12 years and the premiere was almost held in Berlin, until a group of his friends urged him to stay in Vienna and even had a petition signed by scores of influential Viennese pleading with him to premiere there, which after seeing all the support, he ultimately did. Joseph Bhm, a member of Beethovens string quartet had this to say: "Beethoven directed t...he piece himself; that is, he stood before the lectern and gesticulated furiously. At times he rose, at other times he shrank to the ground, he moved as if he wanted to play all the instruments himself and sing for the whole chorus. All the musicians minded his rhythm alone while playing." According to another witness: "the public received the musical hero with the utmost respect and sympathy, listened to his wonderful, gigantic creations with the most absorbed attention and broke out in jubilant applause, often during sections, and repeatedly at the end of them." The whole audience acclaimed him through standing ovations five times; there were handkerchiefs in the air, hats, raised hands, so that Beethoven, who could not hear the applause, could at least see the ovation gestures. It would be awesome to time travel back to 1824 Vienna and watch the whole thing in person. http://bit.ly/1Dh13hy #Beethoven #SymphonyNo9 #Vienna #Music #ClassicalMusic #Orchestra

Had a bit of a late night last evening. The flux capacitors were ready to blow on our light integrator controls system. Not to mention the dilithium crystals needed replacing for accurate time travel. Rest easy though readers. The mission was a success and crisis was averted. Nor were any tribbles harmed during the operation....well, kind of. #DeadTribblesTellNoTales.

World Autism Awareness Day April 2, 2015 is the eighth World Autism Awareness Day. Many people have an opinion about what autism is but few get close enough to it to really understand. Its complex features cannot be directly seen but its manifestations are pervasive and often very troubling to those with the condition, to those around them and to those who care for them. Many in our community have recently watched the movie The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, ...who was nominated for a best actor Academy Award for his portrayal of Alan Turing. The film told the story of Alan Turing, a brilliant British mathematician. Turing had an interest in cryptology and, during the Second World War, worked at Bletchley Hall with a team of code breakers attempting to unlock the complex and sophisticated Enigma code, used by the enemy to send coded messages. They succeeded in breaking the code with the help of a machine that Turing invented. Turings machine is now thought of as the first model of a general purpose computer and Turing is considered the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. The movie had an important counter melody to the main theme. It depicted Turing as difficult to work with and also different in the way he lived his life and related to other people. It showed him as being socially awkward and highly focused on his special project. Ultimately he got into trouble with the law because of his sexual activities, which were considered criminal at the time. Convicted of indecency, rather than serve a prison sentence, he opted for chemical castration. A short time later he died of cyanide poisoning. An inquest determined it was suicide. Turing almost certainly had an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism Spectrum Disorders were not commonly diagnosed till the end of the twentieth century so Turing and many others were never formally diagnosed. History, however, describes many famous people who, speculatively, may have had Autism Spectrum Disorders: Sir Isaac Newton (physicist and astronomer), Albert Einstein (theoretical physicist), Charles Darwin (naturalist), Jane Austen (novelist), Ludwig van Beethoven (composer and pianist), Bobby Fischer (chess champion), Andy Warhol (artist), Jim Henson (puppeteer), and many others. These people were all extremely gifted and functioned at high levels in their chosen fields. Yet history also documents them as having features suggestive of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Many loved repetition, were socially inept and were difficult to work with. Quia in Aeternum We had the pleasure of receiving a very cool picture from one of our past customers. Laurie, from Sweet Thea Cakes https://www.facebook.com/SweetTheaCakes is a big fan of music, Beethoven in particularly, and was recently touring Europe. While in Vienna he stopped by one of Beethovens residences Zum Alten Blumenstock where Beethoven would have been working on Missa Solemnis, considered one of the composers supreme achievements.... Here was Lauries description: I had the thrill of going to Beethovens home when he wrote Missa Solemnis, which he thought was his best work. After a lifetime of loving music, I think I can make a case for it being the greatest musical composition ever written. Your tshirt, Beethovens home, Vienna Austria So awesome Laurie. Thanks again! Beethoven passed on, 188 years today in 1827, but his music and memory shall live on quia in aeternum Beethoven: http://bit.ly/1Dh13hy

This Day in 1903: Radium Reports Begin To Hit The Newspapers March 25, 1903, The Times newspaper (UK) reported that French scientists, Marie Sklodowska Curie and Pierre Curie, communicated to the Academy of Sciences that the recently discovered Radium possesses the extraordinary property of continuously emitting heat, without combustion, without chemical change of any kind, and without any change to its molecular structure, which remains spectroscopically identical after man...y months of continuous emission of heat such that the pure Radium salt would melt more than its own weight of ice every hour A small tube containing Radium, if kept in contact with the skin for some hours produces an open sore, by destroying the epidermis and the true skin beneath and cause the death of living things whose nerve centres do not lie deep enough to be shielded from their influence. Their studies of radioactive substances were achieved under conditions of much hardship barely adequate laboratory facilities and under the stress of having to do much teaching in order to earn their livelihood. Together, they discovered radium and polonium in their investigation of radioactivity by fractionation of pitchblende. Later they did much to elucidate the properties of radium and its transformation products. Their work in this era formed the basis for much of the subsequent research in nuclear physics and chemistry. Heres a 1954 Signet book cover for George Orwells 1984.
