To support a healthy gut and to nourish the beneficial bacteria and other microbes in and on your body, you should eat 30 DIFFERENT PLANTS per week. Our co-founder, Dr. Tracey Beaulne, ND was a guest with @joyoushealth on her Joyous Health Podcast and this was what she recommended. It sounds daunting but if you put your mind to it, it can be done! By eating this way, you will get a variety of nutrients, antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and minerals that will not onl...y feed your gut, but it will also improve your overall health. The microbiome (the bugs that live in and on our bodies) have a huge role in our overall health from digestion, skin health and brain function to hormones and mental health. What do you think? Are you up for the #30plantchallenge? What causes IBS? It is not clearly understood what causes IBS. Many factors can contribute to the pain, diarrhea, constipation, bloating and many other symptoms of IBS including: Genetics-Relatives of an individual with IBS are two to three times as likely to have IBS, with both genders being affected. ... Intestinal Hyperpermeability Tight junctions in your gut lining develop holes, allowing harmful substances to enter the bloodstream and cause all sorts of symptoms Bile acid malabsorption The intestines can’t absorb bile acids properly, causing watery diarrhea Altered Mucosal Immune function The mucosal immune system is your body’s first line of defense from antigens and infection, preventing systemic immune responses to commensal bacteria and food antigens Neuroplasticity: The ability of the brain to form and reorganize synaptic connections, especially in response to learning or experience or following injury. When neuroplasticity is decreased through stress, this can lead to anxiety, depression and IBS Altered endocrine metabolism The gut is also the body's second brain. 90% of the body’s serotonin is made in the gut. Alterations in the body’s ability to make or metabolize serotonin can lead to IBS and depression. Transient Infection An acute infection causing gastroenteritis can later cause IBS symptoms Altered microbiome An altered gut microbiome can lead to IBS by increasing inflammation and reducing serotonin production.
