The Tying Scotsman 02.01.2021

Bitter cold this morning with a biting wind. The heaters been on over an hour, Ghillie’s in the house. I won’t be tying today though, I have a few flies in my pocket if I go out tomorrow. Would be nice to take Ghillie on the river but he’s still too crazy. Hopefully next season, I miss fishing with a dog.

The Tying Scotsman 26.12.2020

Showers earlier but the sun’s coming through now. Supposed to be showers overnight too. Ill be closing at 3pm today, Flu injection appointment. Tomorrow we close the shop at 4pm for the end of 2020 season. Its been a strange one.

The Tying Scotsman 20.11.2020

The gauge peaked around .700 and at .600 now and looking good. Some showers forecast daily up until the weekend. Its also very cold, I’m going to invest in a new shop heater for next season..

The Tying Scotsman 13.11.2020

Some steady rain overnight, supposed to clear this afternoon. The gauge is starting to creep up anyway. More showers forecast on and off during the week. Lets hope it’s a good end to this season..

The Tying Scotsman 28.10.2020

A quieter weekend around the river. Rain forecast tonight into tomorrow morning, hopefully!! The water level is still just above .500 but some fresh stuff would be nice. Enjoy you’re week ahead.

The Tying Scotsman 19.10.2020

The heater’s on trying to warm my hands. Proper fall weather now, supposed to be some rain Monday evening into Tuesday. That would be nice to see the last week in. Its quiet around the lower river again this morning, most anglers upstream where the fish are. Enjoy your weekend wherever you are...

The Tying Scotsman 27.09.2020

A couple of overnight showers, enough to wet the roads. Rain forecast for next week! Well you just never know. Enjoy your weekend.

The Tying Scotsman 16.09.2020

Its a lot cooler this morning, the sun’s out now though and warming up nicely. Customers asking for the special fly? The water is so low again and the fish aren’t interested. They want rain to continue their journey up river.

The Tying Scotsman 28.08.2020

A good amount of rain throughout the province yesterday. None fell here though! The water level is now around .325..

The Tying Scotsman 09.08.2020

A blustery morning out there, still warm though. Its October tomorrow and we’re still in the mid 20’s. A lot of people around the lower river still. We need a bunch of rain!

The Tying Scotsman 02.08.2020

Another warm day forecast, a bit quieter around the lower river this morning. Still good numbers of fish being hooked.

The Tying Scotsman 20.07.2020

An unseasonably warm weekend and supposed to continue this week. Fall colours coming in now, a bunch of rain would be nice as well. The river is around .325 and slowed down some. Enjoy your week ahead..

The Tying Scotsman 13.07.2020

A busy river this morning but it’s dropping back quickly. Hardly any flow over at Doyles this morning. Showers forecast during next week, hopefully enough to keep it topped up. Have a lovely weekend.

The Tying Scotsman 30.06.2020

Its a cold one this morning but the sun is out and should warm things up nicely. Not too many around the river yesterday, I heard of 4 fish hooked. It is the weekend and we have some fishable water, if you’re coming up do drive safely. If you need anything we can have 1 person in at a time with a mask!

The Tying Scotsman 16.06.2020

The water level peaked around 0.700, we got the rain where it was needed at the source in the Highlands. Just a storm through here and not too much rain. Went around the lower river this morning, even Doyles has flow, the first Ive seen for months. If you’re thinking of coming up make it by the weekend, it will drop quickly.

The Tying Scotsman 04.06.2020

Its windy and raining, the storm should pass during the afternoon. Things around the house seem okay, no damage so far. I know there’s been flooding and damage in other parts of the Province. The water gauge is on its way up, once it all settles hopefully we’ll get a few days decent fishing.

The Tying Scotsman 28.05.2020

I’m late this morning, been lashing stuff down before the big wind starts. Ghillie decided to chew through them! Had to put him inside in the end.. Hurricane Teddy is on the way, still unsure of rain amounts as forecasts are varying. Obviously too much all at once and the river will drop quickly. Clear cutting over rules anything else I’m afraid, so we have to be grateful for what we get. Better get more wood in incase we lose power. Do take care!!

The Tying Scotsman 20.05.2020

A real frosty morning here, suns out now and warming up nicely though. The news is full of Hurricane Teddy, tomorrow afternoon it’s supposed to arrive here. Not sure rain amounts but there will be severe winds for a time. Enjoy your week ahead.

WILD ATLANTIC SALMON DIE AS RIVERS GO DRY - CLEARCUTS IN THE CAPE BRETON HIGHLANDS NEED TO STOP. What happens when you clearcut entire forests on Crown land th...at feed one of the last rivers in Nova Scotia that have WILD Atlantic Salmon? When government fails to take into consideration WATER - which is life...and recklessly allows large companies to exploit our forests - this is what happens folks...lack of water trickles down from the highlands into this river, water levels fall, temperatures rise, algae blooms and fish die. We are facing times of drought...a lot less rain. Therefore it is important to call upon government to create plans to restore our forests - to protect our water - the fish...and all that water supports. No more bailouts to keep these companies going. They have done enough damage. We are lucky...if our well goes dry - there are things that we can do. Not so for the wildlife and fish who depend on this river for life. The image of the clearcutting is old...and does not represent the present situation. It's sadly worse and continuing.

The Tying Scotsman 14.04.2020

Sunny and cool morning outside, some showers given for this evening and tomorrow. Teddy supposed to be passing on Tuesday! It’s Saturday, have a lovely weekend.

The Tying Scotsman 25.03.2020

A heavy shower last night but nothing to get excited about. There’s a possibility we may get the end of Hurricane Teddy early next week, fingers crossed. It would be a nice to get a start on some water for the last weeks.

The Tying Scotsman 11.03.2020

Very quiet around the river this morning, mind you the level on the gauge is the lowest I’ve seen it this season.

The Tying Scotsman 01.03.2020

A heavy frost this morning, a whole pile of rain now and things would be good!

The Tying Scotsman 25.02.2020

A slight bump in the water level yesterday but dropping away again. Watching the weather fronts in the Atlantic, Hurricane Teddy is a category 4 at pressent. Would be nice to get the tail end of it. The Margaree Salmon Association will hold its AGM on October 9th at Cranton Crossroad Community Centre, 6 to 8pm. Any member who cannot travel during this time can use a Proxy vote. Erin Gillis can be contacted by email to register. [email protected] You have to register by September 30th.

The Tying Scotsman 09.02.2020

A good start to our week, it’s raining! Started around 6am and forecast until lunchtime, whatever, it all helps. Tying an order for a lad fishing Gaspe next spring, he asked for a few large singles to be included. Below is a 3/0 Pompier. Enjoy you’re week ahead, perhaps we’ll get more rain..

The Tying Scotsman 25.01.2020

Its a cool but sunny morning here in Margaree and another weekend. Enjoy yours wherever you are.

The Tying Scotsman 15.01.2020

Did we really think we were getting rain? Well I was hoping for at least some good overnight showers. Once again though it didn’t happen, the roads are still dry. We really need the rain at the source in the Highlands but looking at the gauge it’s still hovering around 0.210. There are a couple of weather fronts in the Atlantic, Paulette and Rene. Hopefully may get something from them later in the month. Who would believe with only 6 weeks of the season left we haven’t had a... decent flood since June. Tied another for my box yesterday a Black Doctor, using blue, black and brown fox for the wing. I should have just wound half of the guinea fowl feather but as it had a thin stem decided not too. Should have gone with half the feather! See more
