Dhana Trayodashi, which is better known in Bombay and the rest of Western India as Dhanteras, is celebrated as the birthday of Dhanvantari, the god of physicians, who is regarded as an incarnation of Vishnu. Both he and his wife Lakshmi are worshipped after sunset on this day, invited into each house to promote good health and prosperity during the coming year. It is for this reason that this auspicious day is now celebrated by many as Ayurveda Day.
