Grounding. It's something you hear a lot about, but what does it mean? This day in age so many of us are focused on the future. What we need to do next, what might happen.... We're so caught up in our thoughts that we forget to live in the present moment. To me, grounding is just about getting out of my head. Remembering my physical body. Moving my focus from my head down to my feet. Feeling rooted on the ground. In the summer, getting your feet on the earth is the best way to ground. So what do we do in the winter? Mindfulness, writing, quiet contemplation are all great - but my favourite thing? Acupuncture. Nothing gets me grounded like a good Acupuncture session. #acupuncture #yeg #edmonton #meadowlark #rioterrace #thewellnessclinic #naturopathicmedicine #massage #massagetherapy #cupping #grounding #yegpride #instagay #inclusivehealth #wellness #alberta

When your Acupuncturist feels even a little bit of neck stiffness after being outside... They say Wind is the spearhead of disease. A marked sign of a wind cold invasion is a stiff neck. If not dealt with it can spiral into a head cold. Gui Zhi Tang and Moxa can help to stave off any further symptoms!... By staying on top of signs and listening to my body I avoided getting sick at all last winter! #acupuncture #yeg #edmonton #herbalmedicine #moxa #rioterrace #thewellnessclinic #massage #meadowlark #yeghealth #nosickdays #yegwellness #fall #autumn

Autumn has rolled in. Here are some simple things you can do to support your lungs and body this season both physically and emotionally. Autumn corresponds to metal, the lungs, and the emotions of grief and sorrow. Keep yourself warm and protected from wind and dryness. Learn to let go of emotions that are no longer serving you. It's all part of living seasonally. #acupuncture #yeg #edmonton #meadowlark #rioterrace #thewellnessclinic #naturopathy #naturopathicdoctor #chinesemedicine #fall #yegwellness #yegpride #inclusivehealth

To follow up on yesterday's seasonal eating post - I thought I'd share my method for making delicious and quick pressure cooker bone broth! A truly magical tonic with great gut-healing properties. In a slow cooker this would take 48-72 hours, whereas a pressure cooker gets it done in as little as 2! 2.5 - 3 pounds bones (I use pork neck bones or leftover chicken/turkey bones) 3-4 chicken feet or pork feet (for extra collagen!)... 2 onions, quartered 2 large carrots roughly chopped 2 ribs of celery roughly chopped (Feel free to add any other veggie ends you have frozen!) 2 bay leaves 2 cloves of garlic a teaspoon of whole peppercorn 2 tbsp to 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar (helps the bones to release nutrients) Other herbs to taste (don't go overboard!) A few Chinese Dates (Da Zao) or Goji Berries (Gou Qi Zi) will make your broth extra tonifying Boil the bones to release impurities (about 10 minutes. Skip this step if you're in a hurry) Roast your bones until they begin to get a bit of char on the outside (about 25-40 minutes) Chop your veggies and add them to the cooker pot along with your roasted bones, herbs, and vinegar. Cover these ingredients with water until it just covers the surface (about 2L / 8 Cups) Pressure Cook for minimum 2 hours, maximum 4 hours. Strain out your broth and portion into mason jars! Use for cooking, or drink for a daily tonic through the winter! If your broth turns gelatinous when cooled, you know you did something right! The more gelatinous the better! . . #acupuncture #yeg #edmonton #meadowlark #cooking #yegeats #yegfood #wellness #yegwellness #yeghealth #holistic #chinesemedicine #acupunctureedmonton #yeghealth

Here in the West, Acupuncture has become increasingly "scientific" in nature. Now, don't get me wrong, evidence based medicine is important, but by trying to cram Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine into a western reductionist framework we do it a disservice. Science is great for understanding the body, and even the mind - but what about the soul? What about the spirit? The Shen (Spirit) is a fundamental part of this healing practice. Acupuncture is a powerful tool for personal ...growth, and spiritual development. By balancing the body we can help you to weather any change or challenge life throws your way. Are you grieving? Feeling lost or lacking purpose? Do you want to feel a greater sense of connection to the people around you? If you feel like this deeper aspect of your well-being is being glossed over or ignored by other forms of healing, Acupuncture might be just what you are looking for. #acupuncture #yeg #edmonton #meadowlark #rioterrace #thewellnessclinic #naturopathy #massage #localbusiness #localbusinessyeg #westedmonton #patriciaheights #wested #smallbusiness #reiki #chinesemedicine #cupping #spiritual

It amazes me how few people realize that the true power of Acupuncture and a Chinese Medicine lies in its ability to PREVENT disease. TCM is first and foremost a preventative medicine. So why are you waiting until your symptoms become chronic and unbearable before seeking out treatment? If you know you're prone to pain, or feel the beginnings of a headache or cold coming on - why not nip it in the bud before it spirals into something worse?... Maintenance is the name of the game folks! If you get regular massage to "tune up" - what is stopping you from incorporating Acupuncture as part of your self care routine? #acupuncture #yeg #edmonton #meadowlark #rioterrace #thewellnessclinic #naturopathy #massage #localbusiness #localbusinessyeg #westedmonton #patriciaheights #wested #smallbusiness #reiki #wellness

Jon McDonell, R.Ac here. Maybe it's the ongoing pandemic, or maybe it's just the heat. Either way I've been feeling scattered lately. My days seem unproductive and unfocused. I'm trying to keep this quote in mind on tough days like today. I woke up and pushed myself to do something today. Was it like life changing? Maybe not yet. But I continue to learn and grow with every chance I get. I refuse to give up. On the surface I might be moving slowly, but at least I'm moving in t...he right direction. I'll keep pushing through these strange days until I reach my goals. I'll keep moving. I refuse to stop. #acupuncture #yeg #edmonton #selfhelp #inspiration #progress #productivity #grind #mentalhealth

Ah, good old Qi. For Acupuncturists - Qi is our main currency. Qi is what we are aiming to shift with each insertion of an Acupuncture needle. Many practitioners try and simplify the elusive concept of Qi by placing it under the umbrella of "air," "life force," or "energy." While all these terms are technically true - Qi has an ever changing definition based upon the context. Qi is the energetic force flows through our Meridians. Some believe that in Western physiology it ma...y be synonymous with ATP. Glucose and oxygen joining to form energy is essentially Gu Qi (Food Qi) and Qing Qi (Air Qi) combining to fuel our bodies. Qi can become deficient, leading to low energy, shortness of breath, etc. In which case, we treat by "tonifying Qi" using points or herbs to boost you up. Qi can also "stagnate" or become blocked, impeding proper circulation leading to pain or swelling. In which case we "reduce" or "disperse" the excess to promote Qi flow. Apart from energy, Qi also represents the function of our internal organs. Each organ has its own Qi. We have Liver Qi, Spleen Qi, Heart Qi, etc. And each of these organs Qi can become deficient or stagnated. #acupuncture #yeg #edmonton #meadowlark #rioterrace #thewellnessclinic #cupping #reiki #chinesemedicine #acupunctureedmonton #yeghealth #yegwellness #qi #qigong #education

Yin & Yang. I use these words all the time in the clinic. Many of us have heard the terms, or seen the symbol - but do you really understand what it means? Yin and Yang is the duality that makes up EVERYTHING. Nothing can exist without both. Yin represents darkness, moisture, and femininity. It is the slow, cooling, nutritive essence of the body. Yin is stillness, quiet contemplation, and rest.... Yang is its opposite. Yang is bright, active, masculine energy. It is fast, warming, and represents the fire of life. If Yin is water, Yang is fire. Human beings contain both of these energies and in order to maintain health they must be balanced. This is done through lifestyle, diet, acupuncture, and herbal medicine. If Yin and Yang become imbalanced (either excess or deficient), then we will begin to experience symptoms. I'll give just one example. Yang deficiency. If our warming, active energy is deficient, what would that look like? Well, we'd see someone fatigued, chronically cold, with weak digestion, propensity for loose stools. They will be lacking the fire to not only propel food through the intestines and blood through the vessels, but also the drive to propel themselves through life. Luckily, Yang can be tonified with Chinese Medicine. This is just one example of a Yin and Yang imbalance. Everyone is imbalanced to some degree. Visit me at The Wellness Clinic to find out where you fall on the Yin Yang spectrum. #acupuncture #yeg #edmonton #meadowlark #rioterrace #thewellnessclinic #naturopathy #massage #localbusiness #localbusinessyeg #westedmonton #patriciaheights #wested #smallbusiness #reiki #chinesemedicine #cupping #yinyang

Welcome to the first post in the "What is my Acupuncturist talking about?" series. So what are Acupuncture points and what are these elusive Meridian pathways they fall on? To put it simply - Acupuncture points are sites of change. They are areas of the body that have been discovered over thousands of years of empirical observation. When stimulated via a needle or through pressure, These points signal the body to react in a certain way. Whether it is pain relief, calming of t...he nervous system, or lowering of blood pressure, these Acupuncture points have specific, repeatable effects. Many of these points fall on specific areas of physiological importance, whether it be key neurovascular bundles, sites of embryological growth, or muscular trigger points. So how do these points carry out this wide array of functions? Well, the points themselves don't exist in a vacuum. They are all connected on a massive interlinking system of channels and collaterals. These Meridians are what integrate our entire body into a whole. The Meridian pathways link the surface of the body to the internal organs. There is no tissue that a Meridian does not reach. So when you stimulate one point on a specific channel, you can affect the entire pathway. That is why you can needle a point on the foot and get relief from a headache. It's all connected. This is obviously a very basic explanation, but it's your first step in understanding Acupuncture. Questions? Come see me at The Wellness Clinic. #acupuncture #yeg #edmonton #meadowlark #rioterrace #thewellnessclinic #naturopathy #massage #localbusiness #localbusinessyeg #westedmonton #patriciaheights #wested #smallbusiness #reiki #meridians
