SADLY ANOTHER ONE OF THE RCAF SNOWBIRDS HAS GONE DOWN IN KAMLOOPS, BRITISH COLUMBIA. It was filmed literally falling out of the sky shortly after take-off, not at great altitude. The pilot managed to eject, but terribly close to the ground. The aircraft went down loaded with fuel in a residential neighbourhood and buildings are on fire. One report indicates that the pilot came down heavily onto a burning building roof. At present there is no further information. This raise...s the question as to whether the Snowbirds can and will continue to exist. The Avro Tutor aircraft they are using are now singularly old and used only by the Snowbirds performance team. They have been losing their stock at a continuous rate in recent years and lives have been lost. This is the second crash in months As a lover of military aviation aerobatics, I would hate to see the Snowbirds disbanded, but they desperately need a new fleet of appropriately agile and fast current aircraft. This requires a flying fleet and spares, total retooling and new training for aircrew and ground crew. This is a highly expensive proposition. Given the state of national finances, especially now with the government revenue tumbling like an Avro Tutor and Trudeau borrowing money to pay everyone extra income at this time of employment difficulty and baling out large corporations and sending huge sums of financial aid to third world organizations masquerading as governments, I think it will be a hard battle to getting agreements to fund such an acquisition...and perhaps justifiably so. I am assuming that the one person known to have been taken to the hospital in Kamloops is the pilot. Whoever it is I pray for their well being and for the RCAF to stop using these Avro Tutor aircraft. Put them in museums, where they belong.

A RARE AND VERY INTERESTING UK PHOTO FRAME This memorial photo frame is very interesting for two main reasons. Firstly, the wing mounted on the frame is not the expected RFC frame wing. It is very similar to the various sizes and patterns of frame wing seen marked to the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) but this one is clearly marked to the Royal Air Force (RAF). This is the first time I have seen one of these RAF frame wings in metal. Secondly, the pilot is wearing the first 1918 wing of the Royal Air Force, the erroneously manufactured and distributed ARF wing which appeared in at least two patterns, presumably from two distinct manufacturers. These wings were very quickly recalled on official orders and replaced with wings clearly marked RAF These wings are rarely seen in collections and even more rarely in photographs.
