Warm up, warm up, warm up Please (especially for beginner yoga practitioners), take a few minutes to warm up to prior to starting Surya Namaskara. And! ... if you are unsure of any exercise/posture please seek a Health Professional’s advice before attempting the practice of Yoga Asana and Pranayama. Below is ‘my’ casual warm up, practiced earlier, before rounds of Surya Namaskara. Warm up before Surya Namaskara: Bound angle/butterfly Stretches Inner & Outer; hips, thighs, arms and spine Lying down Leg Raised Stretch Stretches Hamstrings, calves, posterior leg muscles, arms and spine Happy Joyous Baby Stretches Glutes, ACL, spine Double Leg Lifts Abdominal strengthening Twist Stretches Spine, outer hips, shoulders, neck Clock circles with raised Legs Abdominal strengthening Bridge Stretches abdominals, spine, quadriceps, neck, shoulders Plow Stimulates all inversion benefits of spine, heart, brain, all organs and stretch neck and spine Like to complete the warm up in seated so after the plough, heading back to seated, before standing Neck circles Stretches Neck Sunshine Arm Breaths Palms together above head and in front of chest Stretches Arms, spine, chest, ribs, neck Arm lifts and Side stretches Stretches Shoulders, arms, spine, ribs, obliques, psoas Eagle arms Crossing arms and uniting hands Stretches Shoulders, arms, spine, ribs, obliques, Hands, wrists Seated Pigeon Modified Crossing bent leg and heel over thigh Stretches Hips, glutes, back, arms Seated forward fold with straight back Stretches All west side of body, hamstrings, calves & back, neck and calves Inverted plank Stretches All east side of body, chest, abdominals, quads, shoulder, as Seated forward fold Stretches All west side of body, hamstrings, calves & back, neck and calves Cat/cow Kneeling Pranayama all fours Stretches Spine spine spine and neck Then up we go for Surya Namaskara And btw the sun is shining here now in Toronto ....must have been our Sun Salutations Thank you! #theyogamatschool #yogatrachertrainingkohsamui
