Happy Valentine’s Day y’all! I am taking the weekend off for some much needed self care. I hope you are too. These times have been rough! The inability to connect with each other face to face and do all the things we love to do is creating such a heaviness in me. Though I feel blessed for technology, the screen time is killing me. Today, I am lying on my couch in my jammies reading this FABULOUS book by @souvankhamthammavongsa Short stories for my short attention span. #ran...dytravis is a gem, forever and ever Amen. We are in this together. #covidvalentinesday #gillerprize #sunshine #selfcaresunday #rest

Tune in on Instagram today Monday at 3:30 pm EST to hear Dr.Gail Parker talk about Ethnic Race Based Stress and Trauma. This concept was life changing for me - being able to name it is the first step in healing. #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackLivesMatter #BIPOC

My first chance to post. Busy day! Happy National Women’s Physicians Day to all my colleagues who are kicking butt making our medical system more humane, studying and improving the care of women and children. Since we were all children once, that means improving care for everybody! I am BLOWN AWAY with the research, the presentations, the improvements in the delivery of care and innovations brought forth by my female colleagues. We all do this while working in a misogynisti...c and paternalistic work environment where so many of us have endured sexual harassment and abuse, bullying and violence against women from some of our colleagues and patients. Somehow we still get paid less for what is supposedly equal work. (Sexist billing codes that pay for procedures on females leas then procedures on males) Who has the more complex bodies? Thank you also to my male colleagues who have stood up for and by us demanding change and respect for us. Thanks @sapnabg for sharing the meme and for wishing me a happy day! This is technically the American Day - look for Canadian Women in Medicine @cdnwim celebrating on March 11th 2021. #nationalwomenphysiciansday #fuckthepatriarchy

This year with COVID it is even more important for us to get the flu shot!

Sharing because it is true. Very hard to stare at the screen all day and practice Medicine virtually. But it has allowed for continuity of care and for my patients in Ontario to access services that might not be available in their community. I am disheartened with the government’s decision to cut pay for the care I provide online. To be paid less for the work that is harder to do has token it’s toll.... I know the care provided virtually is effective, especially for my concussion group. BTW - Now they are going to pay Pharmacists more to do a swab on an asymptomatic patient then they pay a Doctor for treating a symptomatic outpatient. ($42 vs $36) How does any of this make sense?

Back to lying down in the cool basement with a Migraine I forgot how the change of seasons can throw me off. Of course then it decided to become summer again. So will probably go through this again next week... ... Posting this now so FB/Insta will remind me next year when it happens yet again Actively surrendering #migrainessuck (it’s a hashtag) #concussionssuck

What community transmission looks like (this is a real example from our community): a 40-person BBQ in a park led to 105 high-risk contacts in schools. These 10...5 contacts had to self-isolate for 14 days & go for testing. Parents had to miss work, kids had to miss school & 105 more people were in line for testing. All from a BBQ. Our actions matter. See more

Apparently it is #nationalchaiday This isn’t #chai. It’s non-dairy Haldi Doodh (tumeric milk) But it’s all I got for you today. ... A heaping tsp or tbsp of Turmeric (depending on how strong you want it), black pepper, pinch of Cardamom (don’t overdo the cardamom it over powers it), your choice of milk, grated ginger or some ginger powder to taste, and cinnamon. Bring to a slow boil on the stove top, let cool and enjoy! I’ll post an actual recipe for those who cannot follow my Indian instructions soon #turmerictea

To loose the force that IS Ruth Bader Ginsberg before as the sun is setting on Rosh Hashanah is heartbreaking. As the Jews celebrate year 5781, may we all continue to fight for social justice as we continue to weather the storm of 2020. RBG may you rest in power and may your spirit infuse all of us to continue the good fight.

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. This year, more than ever, with the effects of the pandemic job loss, social isolation, fear, anxiety it is more important than ever that we reach out and connect with each other to make sure we are doing ok. We are living in unprecedented times, our climate our economy our ability to maintain our sense of wellbeing, have all been threatened in 2020. You are not alone. We are in this together. For the #Concussion #TBI Community, the... sensations, the emotions, the thoughts can be very strong. Remember that we can heal, that this too shall pass, and PLEASE reach out to the crisis line your or local Emergency Room. I do not know anyone who hasn’t been affected by suicidality or loosing someone close to them to suicide. The risk is real, the threat is real. It may start off as an insidious sense of not being good enough, not being worthy, not being capable, but that gremlin’s voice can grow to be quite strong in the brain and can take us out of rational thought. If it is happening to you - please reach out! In Toronto: Phone: 1-833-456-4566 SMS: 45645 https://www.toronto.ca//crisis-lines-suicide-depression-te

Just a reminder how a single COVID case can spread. Not to freak out the back-to- schoolers, but for us adults to remain vigilant as we go into what could be the second wave. https://www.motherjones.com//sturgis-motorcycle-rally-is/

Saturday Market Day and Food Prep! I am lucky to live by a great farmer’s market and have learned to prep the food when it’s fresh so as to prevent a vegetable graveyard in my fridge. This way, every time I open my fridge they are ready to snack on and can get easily incorporated into breakfast/lunch and dinner! ... Top left corner - Swiss Chard sautéed with garlic and red onion, garnished with olive oil and a pinch of salt Top right corner - blanched Broccolini, with olive oil and a pinch a salt Then green beans - blanched and coated in olive oil. Eating healthy made easy.

Yes there is a #genderpaygap in Medicine. It’s complex, but it is real and NO it does not have to do with women work less hours That’s crap and y’all know it! https://www.cmaj.ca/content/192/35/E1011

Next up on my #booklist! Looking forward to reading @drgailparker’s Restorative Yoga for Ethnic and Race Based Stress and Trauma. A topic I understand well! Dr. Parker introduced the term at @iayt_org’s Symposium on Yoga Therapy and Research in 2017, and then the next year did a Keynote and a workshop on the topic. It was incredibly validating to have a name for what I had experienced growing up, and to apply the process of yoga as a therapeutic tool was healing. How timely that this book has been released this year, with so much wounding being brought to the public eye (it has been happening unseen, acknowledged for so long). While we stand up in protest, we must also give ourselves time to heal.

As helping professionals, we all have to maintain standards, via continuing ed to maintain our license to practice. What do you think if we held the Police to the same standards to which we hold paramedics, nurses, doctors and other health service providers? Licensing colleges are separate and provincial, with board members from the community to ensure we meet practice standards. Should one need a license to be a police officer?
