Though the American Civil War has not spawned the same number of classic films as either World War II or the Vietnam conflict, Director #EdwardZwick's moving, important, and expertly assembled 1989 film #Glory finds its message and setting in the midst of the bloodiest conflict in #AmericanHistory. Winner of three Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor (Denzel Wa...shington), Best Cinematography, and Best Sound, neither the film, its director, nor its composer earned nominations. Both the Best Picture and Best Original Score nomination snubs are perhaps two of the great injustices in the history of the award. Not only a well-made film from a technical perspective, Glory takes audiences on a #moving #spiritual and #emotional journey that sees the corruption, repression, and prejudices of the day breed not contempt or hatred but rather a bond among men with not the color of their skin their defining attribute but rather their moral code, spiritual foundation, and unwavering desire for equality not only in the safe haven of their tents but on the front lines of combat. Thematically, Glory is a triumph despite plot developments that lend to it an air of tragedy. Director #SpikeLee's #BlacKkKlansman is a compelling film focused on race relations in 1970s America, but its also an occasionally tonally disparate film that can be as humorously light as it can be maliciously dark. That contrast between funny and frightening helps ease the burden, but not lessen the impact, of the film's examination of racial strife and hate. "As timely as Lee's #DotheRightThing felt, ...it had been released 10 years earlier, in response to the death of Michael Stewart by police chokehold. In fact, you can hear bystanders in the crowd shouting things like they did it againjust like Michael Stewart. Another person in the crowd shouts Eleanor Bumpurs, murder, calling the name of a black woman who was shot and killed by the police in 1984. The film was responding to an incident that happened 15 years before I first saw it, but the narrative still felt all too relevant. Fifteen years later, I watched it again, and I was once again taken aback by how the climactic scene could have just as easily been responding to the death of Eric Garner. The point wasn’t lost on Lee, either. He underlined it when he edited together videos of the two deaths by asphyxiation at the hands of the NYPD. This, and BlacKkKlansman, are just two examples of how Lee, at his best, uses the medium of film to show how little things have changed for #blackAmericans." - Lawrence Ware, Slate. Martin Scorsese's dramatization of small-time gangster Henry Hill's biography demonstrates how thoroughly the life of organized crime corrupts and consumes everyone in it, along with their families, friends and anyone unfortunate enough to cross their path. But the paradox of #Goodfellas, and one of the essential qualities that makes the film an enduring classic, is ...how effectively Scorsese conveys the allure of that life, the attraction of easy money, freedom from responsibility and swaggering indulgence. Henry Hill's friends all die or go to jail, and he ends up an average "schnook" living in Witness Protection and pining for the glory days, but until then it's a helluva rideand Scorsese makes it so exhilarating that it's just as easy for the audience to overlook the consequences as it was for the real Henry Hill. Goodfellas is both a warning and an invitation. It's a cautionary tale that tempts viewers to throw caution to the wind, because the train to hell has the best party in town. Fans of Goodfellas have long been hoping for a remaster, and for the film's 25th anniversary Blu-ray, it has finally arrived. Under Scorsese's supervision, Goodfellas has been newly scanned in 4K from the original camera negative, then color-corrected in the digital domain. The presentation is spectacular with a very natural, filmic appearance. In addition, there was a later native 4K disc released with HDR (high dynamic range) but it is likely this version was not supervised by Scorsese as it boosts an altered image heavy on the blacks, crushing detail and sporting an overall artificial look.
