There is a wide variety of activities ie. Science and discovery: volcano erruption, tornado in a bottle, experimenting with lights, nature walks and more. The children in our Casa class work in a mixed age group of 3 to 6 year olds. The younger children benefit from learning by the example or direct guidance of the older children. The older children experience the opportunity to be mentors and help the little ones. They are all guided in their work by educators trained in Montessori methods and philosophy.

Our music class Singing and music play an important role in our culture. You'll find music present in many aspects of our lives: theater, television, movies, worship, holidays, celebrations, and government and military ceremonies. At home, music can become part of our family culturesa natural part of our everyday experiences. From birth, parents instinctively use music to calm and soothe children, to express love and joy, and to engage and interact. Parents can build on th...ese natural instincts by learning how music can impact child development, improve social skills, and benefit children of all ages. Academic achievement isn’t the only benefit of music education and exposure. Music ignites all areas of child development and skills for school readiness, including intellectual, social-emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. It helps the body and the mind work together. Exposing children to music during early development helps them learn the sounds and meanings of words. Dancing to music helps children build motor skills while allowing them to practice self-expression. For children and adults, music helps strengthen memory skills.

THORNTON MONTESSORI ACADEMY, established in 1980 (as Thor College), is situated in the Town of Cookstown, just south of the City of Barrie. THORNTON MONTESSORI ACADEMY is a traditional, independent, co-educational facility, which creates a positive academic setting to educate students from Grades K to 12. The Montessori Method of Education, developed by Maria Montessori, is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children. Montessori's method has been used for over 100 years in many parts of the world. The Montessori method views the child as the one who is naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment. It attempts to develop children physically, socially, emotional...ly and cognitively. The Montessori Society cite these elements as essential: Mixed age classrooms; classrooms for children ages 2 or 3 to 6 years old are by far the most common, but 03, 36, 69, 912, 1215, and 1518-year-old classrooms exist as well. Student choice of activity from within a prescribed range of options. Uninterrupted blocks of work time, ideally three hours. A constructivist or "discovery" model, where students learn concepts from working with materials, rather than by direct instruction. Specialized educational materials developed by Montessori and her collaborators often made out of natural, aesthetic materials such as wood, rather than plastic. A thoughtfully prepared environment where materials are organized by subject area, within reach of the child, and are appropriate in size. Freedom within limits. A trained Montessori teacher who follows the child and is highly experienced in observing the individual child's characteristics, tendencies, innate talents and abilities.
