The staff in Senior’s Care homes are not fighting the same Covid-19 battle as the healthcare workers on the front lines. Our battle looks a lot different. We a...re fighting to protect our elders from the outside world. We are trying to prevent boredom, depression and loneliness. We calmly reassure our seniors, especially those who have memory loss and dementia - as to why their families cannot come to visit them right now. We have empathy for the families who feel disconnected from their loved ones. So, we will continue to give comforting words and do what we can to create fun and stimulating activities that can be done safely. We make sure they have proper nutrition, daily monitoring and a routine that gives them consistency and support. We will set up our IPad so there is a better way of communicating with families to reassure that everything is okay. There may be a long road ahead of us, but with positivity and determination, we will all get through this together

In the 60 year history of our Care Center, we have yet to come across such a situation as we are all facing right now. Never before have we had to close our doo...rs to family and friends. There are certainly mixed feelings - some disappointment that families will not be able to see their loved ones for a while, yet relief to know that we are trying to insulate our residents in a protected environment. This generation - who have gone through the hardships of the Depression and WWII - are just taking it in stride with a positive attitude to make it through - and come out the other side. Like they’ve always done.
