This recent collaboration between fashion designer Iris van Herpen and paper sculptor Peter Gentenaar has left us utterly spellbound, it must have been transcendent to be in the space where these art forms ephemerally collided. There is space for each of us in carving a beautiful future for our planet, it is inspirational to see this happen through the arts. . If we think about our lives today, technology is such a big part of the way we think, the way we interact and the wa...y we go through life, Iris explained Couture is evolving, and technology brings it into the 21st century. It offers new possibilities to create materials that are more conscious of our environmental footprint. Iris is just as likely to work with scientists, architects, sculptors and mathematicians as she is the many women in her studio who specialise in traditional savoir faire. And while other designers think about the next six months, Iris is thinking about the next century. Iris van Herpen . My sculptures start as totally 2-dimensional, colored sheets of pulp laying on my vacuum table. The forms in my work are caused by pulp drying and shrinking in unison. The simplicity of the material, which is the carrier, the color, the texture and the form, in one, makes working with it wonderful and direct. In my artwork, I bring my love of nature, its materials and my fascination with technique together. Coming from a painting orientated culture, I found in paper fiber a material much closer to nature and with much more character than I ever found in paint. Slowly I turned from a paper user into a paper and pulp maker and while doing so found endless amounts of new possibilities for shapes and forms in paper. Lorna De Santos the architectural, interior design and product studio recently completed this project, named ‘Installation Topographies of Pleasure’ , the 22-square-metre interior space was designed for Casa Décor 2020, an exclusive exhibition of interior design in Madrid, Spain. "This project is a call to reflect on the frenetic activity of our society through which we invite visitors to live a Wabi-Sabi experience. A spiritual, internal and subjective way of life and a phi...losophical construction that through events in space allude to pure materials, art and an aesthetic ideal. Our goal is to create an aesthetic paradigm that is natural based to give back the sense and reason of the art of living. To go back to a more contemplative way of living, stop in time and space from this frenetic 21st century. A project where sustainability is one of the most important facets since our goal is to recover craft workshops in our country.
