How to Get Toned Arms this Summer! Okay so you want to have toned arms this summer! Let’s grab our toning band and hand weights and meet me on the mat! First things first, like any good Pilates workout, we want to make sure our body is warmed up and there’s no tension in the shoulders or neck. So Let’s begin with a range of motion and mobility warm up.... Spine stretch: Standing tall, inhale and begin to roll your chin to your chest and continue rolling down reaching to your fingers toward your toes. Then exhale and roll your spine back up to standing. Do this 4 to 5 times. Shoulder mobility: Lift your shoulders up, back and down, in a circular motion. Repeat this movement to the front and back 4 to 5 times. Neck Mobility: Take your left ear to the left shoulder. Hold for a full breath cycle. Roll your chin across your chest to the other side and hold the stretch on the right for a full inhale and exhale. Repeat this movement 4 to 5 times. Arm Mobility: Lift your arms overhead and inhale. On your exhale circle your arms out to the side and back over-head. Repeat the circle in both directions 4 to 5 times. Now you are ready to start toning those arms. I like using a band because when we use the band we have to focus on the full movement, expansion and contraction of the muscle. Lets begin with shoulders. There are three sections of the shoulder muscle or deltoid. Front, middle and rear (anterior, medial and posterior). Front Shoulder (deltoid) Shoulder Press Over-head 8 to 10 reps. Medial Shoulder Lateral raise reaching arms to the side. 8 to 10 reps. Rear Shoulder Bend over fly, reaching arms to a T position 8 to 10 reps. Upright Row Bend elbows to the side of body. 8 to 10 reps. Bicep Hammer Curl Arms straight to bend elbow. 8 to 10 reps. Side Bicep Curls Arms at the side of torso. Straighten to bent elbow. 8 to 10 reps. Triceps Kick-backs hinge from hip bring arms to ribs and extend past. 8 10 reps. Triceps Press Bend the arm bend head then extend over-head. 8 10 reps. Triceps Dips Use a chair. Place your hands at the edge of the seat. Lower and lift your body with knees bent. 8 to 10 reps.

Simple exercises to relieve shoulder tightness will also help relieve neck tightness. Easy movements you can do throughout the day, even at your desk. Try doing these movements a few times a day and then notice how your shoulder AND neck will improve in range of motion and pain! The key is to make sure you start with good standing posture. Watch that you don’t pop your ribs. Keep neutral spine and neutral pelvis.

Lengthening Thoracic Spine In sitting, our pelvis is tucked under which then creates a slouch of the rest of the spine. Often, it results in mid back tightness which then contributes to neck pain and shoulder pain. These exercises helps with lengthening the mid spine. However, we must also take into consideration the pelvis. When we are in sitting a lot, our hamstrings get tight and creates the tucked pelvis. So in order to get some length through the spine, we then have to m...ake sure we have hamstring length in order to get more spinal length. Try these four exercises and you will find that your mid back will feel more free, less neck pain, and will even find breathing improves. 1. Open knee child’s pose. Keep your hands pushing into the blocks and keep a straight line of your spine. As you breathe in, crown of head and tailbone are going into opposite directions. As you breathe out, press into the blocks as you let your heart melt. 2. Standing with feet mat width apart. Keep toes straight. Press hands into the blocks. As inhale, think about crown of the head and tailbone into opposite direction. As exhale, press into the blocks with hands, feet into the floor as you let your heart melt towards floor. Keep working on pelvic tilt so that tailbone is going towards ceiling. 3. Sitting on bolster until you can sit on your SIT bones. Feet are pressing into the wall, making sure the toes are straight up. Hands are beside you pressing into the bolster. Inhale, lengthen spine. Exhale, push hands a little more to maintain spine length. 4. Sitting on bolster against wall. Make sure you’re on your SIT bones. Take a yoga brick and place between your back and wall, in between shoulder blades. Inhale, lift arms up.
