My name is Mary Ellen Shatford (nee Cleveland). I’ve lived in Fox Point for 27 years and before that Blandford, and I’m fairly certain the Aspotogan Penisula wi...ll be my home for the rest of my life. My husband Ralph and I raised two children here, one of which has made Fox Point his home too, and is about to give us our first two grandchildren. Besides my family my greatest source of pride is being the Director of Through the Years Day Care and Community Centre for nearly twenty years. As the Director I’ve always told families touring the Centre that the reason for our extended hours is Hubbards is sort of the bedroom community of Halifax and Bridgewater as most of our parents work either in HRM or Bridgewater. Well people seem to be spending more amd more time in the bedroom! There are more families in this area than ever before, and the population of little ones is growing! One thing I know being at this for twenty years is time flies, and before we know it the children at the day care we have today will be grown and having children of their own. It is our job now to make Hubbards and area a community those children will want to stay in when they are grown and have families of their own. Safer streets and inclusive community gathering places are an important part of that. That is why both myself and the Board, staff and families of Through the Years support the work of the Hubbards Streetscape Project wholeheartedly. I encourage you to stay abreast of their initiatives and support them when they need you. Ensuring places like Through the Years continue to grow and flourish is another way you can become involved in your community. As a non profit organization Through the Years is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. At our Annual General Meeting on November 23rd many of those directors and officers will step down as they have reached the end of their terms. Change is good but we need to ensure we recruit new members to join the Board to carry on with the values, mission and vision of the Centre.
