A swarm in a stone wall at 'Fortezza di Civitella,' in 'Teramo', Italy is being attacked by what appears to possibly be Asian Hornets?? It was referred to me as'Terrafierro'. Not sure of the translation. I witnessed them grabbing and flying away with honeybees. The hives in the next picture have entrance reducers in which I assume you keep these hornets from entering.

"The Thunder Bay Beekeepers Association" is pleased to announce our guest speaker, Dr. Heather Mattila. All beekeepers, members and nonmembers are welcome to attend this exciting event. This will replace our January meeting. Thanks Denise for arranging this! The Thunder Bay Beekeepers Association is a non profit organization and donations are always greatly appreciated.

Thought I would share this picture of my "Honeybee Hotel" with you, to open your minds to other possibilities for wintering and summering. It is experimental of course. My theory is the bees leave the hotel, high enough, that they may not do a nose plant in the snow and die during their cleansing flights. I feel there is less opportunities for mice issues. They are protected pretty much from rain, snow, wind. Naturally there will be pros and cons toward new innovations, but I only see mainly pros at this time. I am presently working on bear protection issues. The only other issues that I know I will encounter will be the mess come spring, when I pressure wash the entire bus. I do this anyway with my bee shacks, but feel it is worth it, as I would rather clean up after the mess of a bunch of live hives than dead ones.
