EI and the new CRB are structured like basic incomes - they encourage work Anyone who says basic income hasn't been tried before and it could discourage work, t...ell them this is how EI is modelled, and so is the new Canada Recovery Benefit. Unlike the CERB, these two programs let you keep part of the money when you go back to work. They are essentially time limited basic incomes that leave you making more money while working, which is what basic income does - it gives a raise to working people and ends working poverty. 4 million Canadians are about to get a maximum of 6 months more support (half CRB half EI), but unlike CERB which had a welfare trap built in (you lose the money if you work), with CERB and CRB you get more money when working built partially on top of this basic income: EI IS A MINIMUM INCOME GUARANTEE - "WORKING WHILE ON CLAIM" "If you earn money while receiving EI benefits, you can keep 50 cents of your benefits for every dollar you earn, up to 90 percent of your previous weekly earnings" THE CRB LET'S SOME PEOPLE KEEP $2000/MONTH WHILE WORKING If you're working and getting 50% less income than last year or not working due to covid you can get $2000/month: "You will have to reimburse $0.50 of the benefit for every dollar of net income that you earned above $38,000" This is essentially a $2000 flat dividend (like ubiworks.ca/recovery for those making less than $38,000 and for those above it has a phase out much like a minimum income guarantee, a very generous way to model a basic income.) Basic incomes don't discourage work. Even CERB didn't stop millions of low-income workers to go back to work, giving up their CERB, according to Scotiabank Deputy Chief Economist Brett House https://twitter.com/ubi_works/status/1308806276667899904 Links: - EI https://www.canada.ca//programs/ei/ei-list/working-while-c - CRB - https://www.canada.ca///recovery-benefit/crb-how-much.html

Well, we knew people were overworked and underpaid. But it's never been clearer these past 6 months.

A national unconditional basic income experiment in Finland was found to increase employment and improve people's well-being, compared to a control group that r...eceived unemployment benefits. Some recipients reported that it allowed them to take jobs they wouldn't have otherwise taken, as well as the freedom to start businesses and volunteer in the community and as caregivers. Basic income has been proven to grow the economy and encourage work. In Alaska, where there has been an unconditional dividend for all residents since 1982, basic income increased part-time employment by 17%, with no reduction in work. Every year, the Canada Child Benefit, a national basic income for families, creates the equivalent of 450,000 full-time jobs while growing our economy by $46 billion. https://www.newscientist.com//2242937-universal-basic-inc/
