What should you know about resistance to thyroid hormone? Also called Refetoff syndrome, it is a rare inherited condition characterized by reduced responsiveness to thyroid hormone due to mutations on the thyroid hormone receptor. Here is some info about it: 1. Patients usually have elevated thyroid hormones and a normal or elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone level. 2. The most well-known cause of the syndrome are mutations of the thyroid hormone receptor.* 3. Patients can p...resent with symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. There can be various other symptoms even between members of the same family with the same mutation, with goiter and tachycardia being common symptoms.* Remember: Due to the nonspecific symptomatic presentation, patients can be easily misdiagnosed. Therefore, the diagnosis should involve identifying the mutation of the thyroid receptor.* *Rivas AM, Lado-Abeal J. Thyroid hormone resistance and its management. Graves orbitopathy, also known as Thyroid Eye Disease is an autoimmune disease, common in people with Graves’ disease, in which the eye muscles and fatty tissue behind the eye become inflamed. This inflammation can push the eyes forward (staring or bulging) or cause the eyes and eyelids to become red and swollen. Here is some info about it: 1. It occurs in as many as 25 to 50% of patients diagnosed with Graves' disease. It is more likely to appear in women.* 2. Symptoms: ...a foreign-body sensation in the eyes with pain or pressure in or behind the eye, and pain on moving the eye in any direction, blurring, swelling or redness around the eyes. 3. Risk factors: smoking is the most significant risk factor and the disease is more severe and less responsive to treatment in patients who smoke. Other risk factors: genetic factors and exposure to radioiodine (a treatment option for Graves disease).* If you notice any change in your vision or develop any new symptoms such as pain with eye movement, you should consult with your physician. It is important to get an early diagnosis and prompt treatment with the help of endocrinologists and ophthalmologists. *Fox TJ, Anastasopoulou C. Graves Orbitopathy. StatPearls. January is Thyroid Awareness Month: even in times of the COVID-19 pandemic, when our life is so busy with unprecedented tasks and worries, it is advised to regularly monitor our thyroid hormone levels. When preparing for your thyroid lab testing, stop taking biotin (a B vitamin taken to improve hair health) for at least 2-3 days before the testing to avoid the risk of causing false measurements of thyroid hormone lab results.* In these unprecedented times of the COVID-19, pay... attention to consume an adequate amount of food rich in vitamins (vitamin D, vitamin C, vitamin B) and minerals (zinc, selenium). *Katzman BM et al.
