What are some of the differences between Synthroid/Levothyroxine and desiccated thyroid? Synthroid/Levothyroxine = synthetic T4 Desiccated = naturally derived T4, T3, T2, & T1 ... Both are standardized in the lab. One is created from synthetic chemicals, the other is derived from animals and formulated in a lab. Both follow strict quality control procedures. Up until the 1960s desiccated was the standard treatment for hypothyroidism. Now, Synthroid is the standard and is the second most prescribed medication in North America, and the top 5 medications prescribed worldwide. There are benefits to both medications, and different patients respond well to different options. Unfortunately, desiccated thyroid Rx is hard to get. More on this in another post. Have you tried desiccated thyroid? If so, who prescribed it for you? #thyroidmedication #synthroid #levothyroxine #armourthyroid #desiccatedthyroid See more

There’s a common theme I see in the comments on my posts, the topic most discussed in thyroid Facebook support groups and forums, and that is , , . Don’t get me wrong if you’re in a hypothyroid state medication is a very important piece of your care. ’ . Which kind is better, what dose, spit dosing... Getting the dose right is key, ’ * * . There’s so much dialogue about this kind being better than that, this approach is better than that. Don’t get me started on the info from Stop the Thyroid Madness (but props to Janie for being a leading thyroid advocate!). ’ , . Building up your foundation of health, reducing your autoimmune disease activity, and addressing the root cause- taking these small steps toward better health ’ . , . ’ , ’ : . See more

If I had to sum it up, not a fan. Lots of buzz words on the label, ineffective doses. Often contain iodine ... Low doses of important nutrients, lower than dietary intake. If you’re deficient in certain nutrients, or not absorbing them well, take that specific nutrient, not a thyroid multi that has it on the label but contains a super low and ineffective dose. Tyrosine I have never prescribed tyrosine. Yes, the thyroid needs tyrosine to make thyroid hormones but taking a whole bunch extra doesn’t help the thyroid make more hormones. You’re getting enough in your diet, I assure you (not true for everything, but tyrosine ). My analogy is if you’re trying to turn your car on and it won’t start, having 500 extra sets of keys (tyrosine) won’t help it start any better. You only have 1 ignition (receptor) and 1 key is more than enough, it’s the engine we need to address not by providing 500 more sets of keys. Make senseor only to me?! Contain things I don’t necessarily want to prescribe alongside nutrients, like herbs. Herbs are great, but not everyone needs them across the board all the time. Also, herbs aren’t safe for everyone all the time, are you pregnant, breastfeeding, on medications, or have any other medical conditions? (’ ), , ’ . ’ . Those are my 2 cents . Save your $$ on thyroid support supplements and instead take specific supplements, for specific purposes. DIY’ing isn’t the best course of action here. A Naturopathic Doctor will outline what the best supplements are , taking into account your health, your symptoms, and your specific needs. #supplements #thyroidsupport #seeanND See more
