Thank you to @marinerenewablescanada for hosting us aboard the Tall Ship Silva last Thursday. And thank you to the sponsors, Halifax Offshore Consulting, Bourque Industrial Ltd, Atlantic Towing Ltd, and Spar Marine Ltd. Amidst our new normal, the event was a great success. We are happy to announce that yesterday at 11:30am, we installed PLAT-I back in its moorings at Grand Passage with the assistance of Huntley's Sub-Aqua Construction's two vessels, Kipawo (pictured below) and Tykesha J, and our own work boat SMEagol. We will resume testing of our tidal energy system and we are looking forward to getting back to operations within the ‘new normal’ we find ourselves all living. We remain committed to the safety and well-being of the communities... in which we work and have implemented procedures to ensure we do our part to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Thank you to all of the surrounding communities for your continued support. #NovaScotia #tidalpower

We are very happy that Nova Scotia is rapidly reopening following two weeks with no new cases of COVID-19. We all need to be vigilant to ensure our continued success in fighting the spread of the virus, but its great to see businesses resuming operations, including those on Brier Island, NS. The Brier Island Lodge is open and whale watching tour operators have been given permission to resume operations from July 1st. SME is also resuming the testing of our tidal energy system... at Grand Passage. We will initially be doing maintenance to PLAT-I while it is temporarily moored in Westport Harbour, which will take a couple of weeks, and then the platform will be reinstalled in the Passage. We will provide advance notice to the local community and mariners prior to reinstalling the platform. We remain committed to the safety and well-being of the communities in which we work, and will be implementing procedures to ensure we do our part to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This includes limiting the number of people working on site, restricting site visits, and adhering to government guidelines on hygiene and physical distancing. If you have any questions or concerns about our operations please do not hesitate to contact us. Photo credit: Amy Tudor

SME has suspended all operational activities, including the testing of our tidal energy system at Grand Passage. The platform was removed from its moorings to replace a faulty mooring line component, and this has been accomplished, but we have taken the decision not to reinstall the platform and resume operations at this time. The operation of our system requires members of our team to be on site, to perform monitoring activities, as this is a current requirement of our DFO a...uthorization. Our primary concern is not only the safety and well-being of our team, but also of the community where we are operating, and we don’t want to enhance the risks of community transmission through the movement of people between the Halifax area and the Digby Neck. We have therefore decided to pause our testing program until the threat posed by the outbreak of COVID-19 has passed. At SME we are committed to doing everything we can to avoid the spread of COVID-19 and help protect the local communities in Freeport and Westport, which have been fantastic supporters of our project. We wish everyone well in these turbulent and unprecedented times, and if we work together to beat the spread, we will soon be able to return to our normal lives. (Photo credit: Amy Tudor)

Grand Passage PLAT-I Update Part II The South mooring line requires realignment and we have identified an asset to assist. We expect that PLAT-I will be put back into position within the next 14 days. In the meantime, the platform will remain safely moored in Westport harbour while we ensure full functionality of all instrumentation onboard and perform any required maintenance to get ready for generation.

Grand Passage PLAT-I Update The mooring line to the North has been repaired and it is ready for re-connection. The South mooring line requires realignment and we are waiting on assets to do so. Due to the pending storm, the platform has been safely moored in the Westport harbour and work will recommence when the weather permits.
