My step-by-step Thyroid Protocol . If I or my patient suspects (or knows through previous lab testing) that they may have a thyroid problem, then these are the steps I follow (in order): . 1 Check nutrient status... I want to make sure that all nutrient levels are adequate. We first want to rule out any common fatigue inducing nutrient deficiencies such as: Iron B12 Magnesium Folic Acid (B9) Vitamin D . In addition, I also look at the key nutrients that support the thyroid including: Iodine Selenium Zinc B2 Vitamin C Vitamin A . . 2 Assess and Support Digestive Function After we’ve ruled out or addressed any deficiencies, the next step is to look at digestive function to see how well you’re actually absorbing your food (and nutrients). If you continue to supplement and your gut doesn’t have the ability to process those nutrients you now just have expensive . 3 Diet The next step we address is the diet. I usually have my patients either focus on a thyroid or liver supportive food plan to have a downstream affect on their body. Diet >> Heals the gut >> Absorbs nutrients >> Improved thyroid function (that’s the goal anyways ) . 4 Test the Thyroid You’re probably thinking...WAITtesting the thyroid is step 4! AND only comes after the other steps? Yup, and here’s why: the first three steps are foundational steps to health. And often when we do those things first, you already start to feel a lot better. . However, I know that’s not always the case, so then we test your thyroid numbers to see where else we can support your body. . At this step, we may add thyroid specific supplements / nutrients and if needed work with your primary care provider to add pharmaceutical support as well. . . . Do you need support with your thyroid? . . . If you feel like you need help figuring things out schedule a free, no obligation 15 minute chat with me to ask me any questions that you may have. . I don’t know about you, but I think winter can be a lot of funand right now I’m trying to focus on what I CAN do rather than CAN’T do. . While we live in Canada and winters are very long, I see a lot of people who really dislike the season and tend to stay inside during the long winters. . Don’t get me wrong, I myself enjoy a short escape to the tropics mid-winter, but I also believe that there are a lot of fun things you can only do during the winter that are also safe duri...ng this time: . Cross country skiing Snowshoeing Build a quinzee Build a snowman . My favorite winter activities are skating on the long river trail in Winnipeg (so much fun!) and playing outdoor hockey or cross country skiing along the trails in Sandilands or Hecla. . What are you looking forward to this winter? What’s your favorite winter activity? See more

Did you know naturopathic doctors can run lab tests? . Lab testing is an important part of medicine as it gives objective reasons why something may be going wrong or why a particular treatment is necessary to undergo. . Testing can also give important feedback to see if treatment is working the way we expect.... . As a licensed naturopathic doctor, I’m licensed to run general blood chemistry tests such as iron, ferritin, vitamin B12, liver function tests, thyroid tests, kidney function tests, CBC’s, electrolyte tests, etc. . If your medical doctor has already run these tests, we can request them from your medical doctor by getting you to sign a release of records. . This helps us not have to repeat lab work and it saves you having to pay to get that type of testing done privately through me. . However, there types of testing available include several specialized tests that give a much more detailed look into various systems in the body that may NOT be available through your medical doctor. . Some of the most common types of specialized lab testing that I do with my patients are: . Food Sensitivity Testing Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis Comprehensive Metabolic and Cardiovascular Profile (Cardiometabolic) Comprehensive Hormone Testing (urine DUTCH test) Heavy Metal Testing (urine) Stress Hormone 4 Point Cortisol Test (urine) Organic Acid Testing Environmental Toxin Testing (phthalates, parabens, etc) Comprehensive Thyroid Testing . These tests dive deep into what could potentially be going in your body and give us an even better glance at what’s really going on. . Holiday eating hack (Save this post!) . When changing your lifestyle, I get that perfection while eating out or eating during special occasions is not realistic - especially since we are in the heart of the holiday season. Because of that, I often share hacks that my patients can use to help eat indulgently (occasionally) with less worry & symptoms. .... Quick hack for eating indulgently you have digestive problems and you know your diet is not going to be perfect: . Take digestive enzymes before your meal and it can potentially reduce about 50% of problems. It helps to cut down on both the intensity and duration of symptoms. . [NOTE: this is not a license to eat something bad...but it is helpful to keep the symptoms at bay if you want to enjoy a special meal] . Has anyone tried this hack before? See more
