As there are concerns for the care and wellbeing of people on AISH, as someone who must regularly use therapies, and exercises to help deal with severe pain, fatigue and mental health, I want those who need the help to get the help the most. Anyone on CPPD or AISH will have 4 classes per month at zero costs permanently. Message us if you have questions. The classes will cover several Qigong systems (Chinese yoga) neigong (healing meditations) the basics of Chinese medicine, basic musculoskeletal anatomy and an introduction to herbology.

Trademark Skill Gong ... Do not be afraid of someone refining Ten Thousand skills one time, but be afraid of a person perfecting one skill Ten Thousand times. Trademark Gong is also called Private or Selfish Gong [si gong ], because it is your own only, for selfish reasons and no one else knows that you possess this skill. Because if your strength was divulged, it could potentially cost you your life in the olden days. It could be compared to a secret weapon in war; once the other country realizes the magnitude of this weapon, it is already too late to take countermeasures. Trademark Skill Gong is not complex, consisting of 1-5 moves maximum, including drawing the aid from training objects such as sand bags and ropes. Over the course of time ones physical power becomes abundant and becomes a comprehensive result in the form of a special field and the change of the body and muscles. In order to successfully subdue an enemy with one move of Skill Gong, you must practice every day for countless repetitions. In one year you can achieve a foundation, in two years a small accomplishments [xiao cheng] and in 3-5 years a great accomplishment [da cheng]. Everyone knows when building a house you need a foundation. Practising Gong Fu is the same since a basis is necessary. Straight punches and kicks require power, jumps and straight kicks must be high, therefore, you must stretch the tendons. The physical body must be agile, nimble and fast. The hand, eyes, body, methods and stepping must be coordinated and unified. Strength must be long lasting, and the moves and techniques must be changeable and variable. Only this way you have a foundation of Gong Fu practice. It is just like two people fighting and grappling: One must be equipped with both attack and defence skills as well as having extremely-long and durable stamina and physical strength. This type of stamina may be called Source Power [ben li ], which can be obtained through long-time running and tempering of the muscles. Skills and moves can be accomplished through the practice of forms [tao lu ]. However, in this regard there is the misconception of believing that studying martial arts forms, and training strength, power and stamina is precisely practicing Gong Fu. The Masters frequently said: [If one engages in ]Shadow-Boxing without practicing Gong, [when in] old age [it] only [leaves] an empty space. Some people spend five or ten years of time to study ninety martial arts forms; in the end they have nothing at all. In the Gong Fu world there is one sentence: Do not fear that someone practices one thousand movements - each movement once a day. However, fear someone who practices one move one thousand times a day. It is said that spending a very long time to study fifty martial arts forms is not as good as spending the same time to practice just one, two or three moves with Gong-Methods. With diligent practice in Trademark Skill Gong will be accomplished. Once you are able to smash five stones with one palm-strike, and to split apart a tree pillar with one kick of the foot, whose human physical body, a structure of blood and flesh, could possibly withstand your attack? ________________________________________ Post-Scriptum: The full article will appear in the appendix of Purple Cloud Press forthcoming publication of The 49 Barriers of the Cultivation of the Dao by Xing De, a manual for refining ones Inner Nature based on Liu Yimings 50 Barriers. Badass , killer instinct, , combative , fuck you up , I fear no man Type of Jazz sigh.... It's important to work on relaxing. You gotta be relax to see things u...nfolding, if you are tense and in your head , you probably wont see something happening til you are right in the middle of it. You gonna be relax emotionally as well or it will be so easy to trigger unnecessary conflict, experience greater fear and anger. When you are tense emotionally , you won't see much, there will be tunnel vision, you have to relax to be aware whats around and available - where are the exits?, whos got a weapon?, how many people are there?, where are the cameras?, the witnesses?, the cars ?, the barriers? etc You will have no idea when you are tense.... You gotta relax physically as well, or you will run out of breath really quick. Tension screws up your speed, messes with your accuracy, destroys your co-ordination, decreases your explosiveness, screws up your timing and shut off your tactile sensitivity. " When you get hit, thats when you gotta be calm and relax" Cus damato, Mike Tyson's teacher " Its not the mean tough guy you have to worry about, its the guy whos relax and happy to fight you" - Mike Tyson " a true warrior is always calm" - Myamoto Musashi, winner of 60 sword duels As you can see- both mentally and physically , scientifically, relaxing is much better functioning than tension. Learn to relax, you do not want to be the raging bull out of control or the guy panicking, both types gets other people kill on the team. You want to be the calm, competent guy in the room when others need protecting. We must learn to win efficiently without panicking and spazing This is why I am sooooooo against the martial image of the badass combatives types, tough guy killer, aggressive, angry , fuck you up , I 'll ripe your balls out type of image and marketing- it is all for increasing tension in themselves and worse in unknowing students. Martial Arts should be good for the body and more importantly it should never create mental health problems. And make no mistake we live in an age where tension-anxiety-stress-depression disorders is heavily on the rise, unprecedented rise. 68% of adults in BC have tension-anxiety problems, enough is enough. Our country no longer know how relax under stressful situations in daily life..... and nothing is more stressful arguably then dealing with violence. There is a need , absolute need to present oneself as a badass, perhaps it is to compensate for ones own low self esteem, perhaps it is to take advantage of people since tension and badassery is great for marketing on the weak minded, especially the young. But for better efficiency and for better mental health, perhaps teachers might consider teaching relaxation as the basis of function. But ..... "Relax ", must be done properly, it can't just be a philosophy all talk. Most people that preach relaxation are the same people who curls up into a ball as soon as things are non co-operative , this helps no one - relaxation is a direction to work towards, an endless path, it should never be use as a lie to built ones pedestal. Same as when you observe a class, everyone is talking , can't wait to share, show off what they know, this is pride. Ego. WHere there is pride, there is no silence, no sensitivity, and hence no relaxation. Relaxation have many great drills from stillness, to movement, from co-operate flow drills to semi random to full on relaxing during non-cooperative work. BUT all these acts of relaxing just becomes limited tricks when the proper starting point is not there - you will be relax in class but still tense outside of class. The first requirement is you have to finally , actually be sick of your own tension ( stress, anxiety, anger, ego , vanity excess pride etc) only then will real relaxation comes knocking. Lacking that, tension will persist.

After Class Sometimes we pay a price for "practicality". In the process of simplifying things, focusing on only the big thing, we often miss too many little thi...ngs, leaving them unexplored . Therefore not realizing until we look back much later that many times the next big breakthrough can only be possible through the adding up of the many tiny little elements that seem insignificant at the time. The detail of the stuff is amazing because it is endless. It seems similar to the daily zazen sitting sessions after class. When one turn off the focus of the "big picture" of the future and instead become focus on the here and now, sometimes there is an unexpected stillness that hits you, a huge relaxing endorphins rush, unbelievable! Then when you come out of it, you can revise your goals and "big picture" in a much more intelligent way

Ive been argued with (people on my team)... Ive been told Im wrong (coaches from other teams)... but Ive been screaming it from the roof tops for years. YOU... CAN NOT CONDITION YOUR BRAIN FOR CONTACT!!! People spar way to hard, far to often in combat sports... yes even boxing. Now add kicks, knees, elbows, the impact from wrestling to the mix and your exasperating the problem, attacks from the low line (legs) that you may or may not see. The velocity of the kick to the head or knee... head gear doesnt help it makes it worse... people go even harder and headgear impacts your vision... head gear only helps with cut prevention IMHO. Like anything, Hard Sparring has its place, but definitely not the place it has now in most peoples belief system or frequency. My people rarely spar hard, they win far more then they lose, they have no problem pulling the trigger in fights and they are not getting KOd in fights with the same frequency they did when we did spar hard like most gyms many many years ago. I keep track of this data so I can modify my training as necessary. Once you know what its like to hit hard and be hit hard...Controlled, focused Technical Sparring with appropriate intensity is the most valuable form of sparring bar none. Please tell me another gym in North America with as many athletes fighting in as many styles of combat sports on a global scale... I dont say this in an attempt to be braggadocios Im simply highlighting that my opinion on this particular topic should carry some value. Save your hard head contact for your actual fights and you will fight better, get KOd less and have a much longer career. See more

ALL BITE, NO BARK As I stood with my eagle claw on my Pak Mei Sifus trachea and state got you, he simply says Look down and nods with his eyes: his claw ...is over my Crown Jewels and I didnt even know. I am about to laugh but a slight pinging pain in my left wrist, which hed just brushed aside in the trapping spar, takes my attention. I look at the point and am met with a very clear, crisp, deep black bruise. That bruise takes about 3 months to go and almost 2 years to stop giving me pain. Growing up under my Sifu learning Shaolin and Pak Mei gave me some very unique experiences early on in life which caused me to obsess over finding the answers to how this actually works. Hed taught me that two types of Martial Art needed to be trained: gungfu for the street, and gungfu for the ring. Hed already earned 1st and 2nd place in full-contact open sparring (no gloves/pads) in China against open styles (amusingly recounting how the Aikido guy got knocked out in 6 seconds). He said: Luke, gungfu is for when no-one is expecting it. Youre a normal guy getting mugged or in a bar and suddenly you can strike. The ring (MMA) is expected, its pre-emotive. This takes a different strategy, very athletics based. You try to gungfu in there and youre dead. During our Pak Mei training he talked to me about Gink, or Scared Power, given the name in reference to the similarity of the power generated when you are startled. He described his training with Pak Mei Clan to be like being hit by electricity, a power hed never felt before. And that bruise hed left on my wrist left, it definitely made its mark on my life. What is this power and why is it so unheard of in Western strength methods? Ive had the wind knocked from my lungs by barely a touch; Ive had my neck get whiplash from a guy who just tugged my wrist and made me feel like a rag-doll. And yet I find the West so adamant to disregard it. What sparked my curiosity only created disdain in others. It had gotten so bad that I even once had a long-term student, back in the day, whod been growing more and more alpha as our training went on, challenge me in class when I recounted experiences. Puffy chested and proud of his arrogance, claiming Bullshit. Prove it to me. Show me the science in front of the entire class with a smug grin on his face. It was then I realised that the world had changed from my days, that kind of challenge unheard of - all of my teachers would absolutely answer questions when I politely asked them after class to elaborate - but to try and show up my trainer in front of his student? Just bizarre. It was then that I came to realise that our biggest hurdle now in teaching internal arts was not a lack of evidence, but that self-empowerment had become confused with self-entitlement. As a friend recently wrote The fangs have been removed. What should be bone-breaking bites have been resolved with thuds and slaps, because a fear to explore the unexplainable has been integrated into daily psychology. And part of the problem I believe is too much focus on technique, and not enough focus on the bite behind technique. Technique is replacing fangs with false-teeth. Yes, they still hurt, but its not the same. A block should be like a machete effortlessly cutting into bone, a brush should be like a chainsaw running against a tree, a strike should feel like a bullet entering the body, a dodge feel like being sucked into a black-hole. Conditioning is the teeth, Strength the jaws. These two working in conjunction helps the body to relax and therefore allow it to become more in-tune with its mass. The more a body is able to handle the forces of its own weight, the more it can effortlessly use that weight. And thats what makes this work internal. You cant see it. You HAVE to feel it. Keep your mind open and your feet grounded. There is a world of stuff out there you might be disregarding that could actually be the answer youre looking for. Namaste

People who do not train tend to spend a lot of time discussing which approach is the best. The thing is , regardless of systems , most are the same: you have ab...out 90% of the people pretty average and probably might not be able to make the stuff work, and about 10% really good at it. So the real question is , how to raise skill level not which style is better. If you are the 10% , you can make any style work easily since most people that pick fights are pretty average in terms of attributes and skill.... thank god. However, if you are the 90% you probably cannot make anything work anyways against someone who is consider dangerous and good at what they do. People have jobs, they are tired, they have family responsibilities, they have a million things going on. Teachers are in the same position , they have classes to teach, they have to run a school, they have family responsibilities too. So how do teachers and students raise their skill level ? Some learning strategies that might help: 1 Practice at home - judging from the last 20 years of coaching , I notice about 1% of the student would consistently practice at home. One of the major reason this happens is that people feel they do not have an hour or two to set aside. The truth is even 15-20 minute DO make a difference ie in 15 minutes is possible to throw 800-4000 straight punches with breaks in between! when Students realize this and start to practice 15 minutes per day. They immediately see the difference within a 6 month period. I currently have a student who is older , started new and yet he is improving at a faster pace than the rest because he practices 15 minutes a day , when he comes to class, hes ready. Most students you have to review the same stuff at the same level over and over and over for years, because they have forgotten the material soon as they leave class. 2 For those with a bit more time, it is possible to practice outside of class with training partners and classmates. I did this consistently with my teachers permission and guidance whenever I took lessons and it help me a great deal. 3 Private lessons , workshops, retreats are other excellent ways to really make ones skill take off. I usually do not do workshops, private lessons , retreats much at all because I just don't have time with my own training going on . But I am more than happy to recommended and send students to other good teachers for private lessons, workshops etc They are excellent if you find the right coach because of the increase training time. In the old days it was different, it was not a cilent-coach relationship, it was a family relationship. SO after training , it was common to go eat with the teachers, which is usually when I learn the most anyways. But now its a different world so professional privates, workshops are excellent. Not same but still great 4 Whenever I get a chance to see my teachers , I do not talk much, I keep my mouth shut and my ears open and I take notes for later use. In todays world this is very difficult to apply but it is still very useful. Usually people are busy talking and sharing, which is good but try to balance it with listening to instructions. Martial Arts is a step by step learning process which carefully layers different skills into the nervous system. Later it becomes free expression but that is far down the line. With some simple planning and habits it is possible for you to improve your skills much faster
