Great new!! Play more! It lays the foundation for success in every facet of development. Also, I think every single parent and educator should read "Balanced and Barefoot" by Angela Hanscom (founder of TimberNook ). It'd be a good one to gift at a baby shower!

It’s good to reflect on how many risky opportunities our children are getting on a regular basis. If we want to raise children who make healthy choices as a teen, they must practice as a child.

I’m spending my FREE TIME (woohoo!) getting to some books I’ve been wanting to read. I’m only 17 pages into How to Raise a Wild Child. The Art and Science of Falling in Love with Nature by Scott D. Sampson and feeling compelled to share. We owe it to our children and to our Earth to foster a connection. I’ll share more about why this is important in future posts. Have you read this book? What’s your favourite nature read? Share below #howtoraiseawildchild #natureconnection #naturelovers #forestplay #natureplay #timbernook #timbernookelgin

We are going to miss these sweet, smiling faces each Monday afternoon (I wish I could put a photo of every single one of them!). We were sad to say goodbye to our Little Wild Ones for the year, but we hope to welcome them back in the new year. We have seen amazing development in these children over the past 6-12 weeks, witnessing them becoming more confident, capable and social children. It has been a pleasure to hang out with them in the woods during such a challenging and isolating time in our world. Thank you Little Wild Ones families. Enjoy the season ahead and we hope to see you soon

Stealing the idea from our friends at TimberNook of Greater Calgary, we decided to do some school photos for our Little Wild Ones who are not attending school this year. I think they are the best school photos ever!

Let the children spin, go upside down, and spin in circles till they get dizzy -- their development depends on it!

For TWO HOURS a group of 4-5 boys were focused on this mud pit because they found a spring and wanted to learn more. There was nearly zero adult interaction, interruption, encouragement or education, but they focused on it for two hours and you can be sure they were learning and growing throughout. They could be heard asking each other questions, discussing it and helping each other. Plus they had the most sensory rich experience possible! At the end, when I said wow, so yo...u found where water comes from the youngest said to himself and I thought it was made in taps.... They won’t forget this experience and it will likely lead to more learning (at least in our homeschool ). Next time you say that your child cannot focus or has attention issues, ask yourself why that might be... Is there a way they could lead the inquiry and exploration? Could they be moving while learning? Could this learning engage the senses? Could they accomplish this learning in a more meaningful way? Is there something they are interested in that could incorporate our learning goals? We need to reframe our thinking about focus and attention in children. We need to ask ourselves if this is a problem when probably 80% of us would say our children can’t focus or whether it’s our expectations that are wrong. Maybe we’re doing something wrong and not them...

According to Angela Hanscom, author of Balanced and Barefoot, and founder of TimberNook, kids of all ages need a minimum of three hours of free play a day, idea...lly outside for proper development. According to a study cited in Scott Sampson's book, How to Raise a Wild Child, the average kid in a America gets 4-7 minutes (not a typo) of outside play a day. According to the National Institute of Health's Medline Plus reports, the average kid spends 3 hours per day watching television and 5-7 hours total on screens. It's time to take childhood back. The entire purpose of 1000 Hours Outside is to attempt to match nature time with average screen time. If kids can consume media through screens 1200 hours a year on average then the time is there and at least some of it can and should be shifted towards a more productive and healthy outcome!
