After the success of the Tulip chair, Saarinen continued his experiments to design a chair that promoted comfort, not from the thickness of its cushioning, but by the shape of the seating area. Originally, he went on experimenting with techniques to bend plywood, but he went in a different direction when a simple request was made of him by Florence Knoll, who said, "I want a chair that is like a basket full of pillows something I can curl up in."
