The Timmins Police Service acknowledges that January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. This day is meant to bring attention to a crime that leaves a lasting toll on human life, families, and communities all across the country. Without exaggeration, Human Trafficking is considered a modern form of slavery.... This illegal act involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain labor or sex against the will of the person being violated. Traffickers use violence, manipulation, or false promises to lure their victims into trafficking situations. Trafficking victims often and typically experience physical and psychological abuse. Victims of Human Trafficking endure sexual abuse, food and sleep deprivation, threats to their individual welfare and that of their family members. Isolation and fierce control are the common mechanisms used by Human Traffickers. The goal of this day of observance is to bring greater awareness to this insidious type of crime and its detrimental effects on individuals and, to a larger extent, our community. The Timmins Police encourages anyone with suspicions about anyone who may be a victim of this type of criminal activity to report the matter immediately for further investigation. Victim’s Services (Timmins and District) is at the ready to offer guidance and counseling to those persons victimized in such ways. Human trafficking is difficult to measure, due in part to the clandestine nature in which it is perpetrated. While there has been an increase in the number of human trafficking incidents reported by police in recent years, it is believed that Human Trafficking remains vastly underreported likely for the following reasons: Victims are usually in a physically, socially, or economically vulnerable position, making them unwilling or unable to report to police. Traffickers sometimes deliberately implicate victims in humiliating or illegal activities to keep them from reporting; for example, humiliating sexual acts, use of illicit substances, and fear of exposure to family members or authorities. Physical force or psychological techniques are used to intimidate victims; for example, increasing a victim’s sense of isolation and dependence by removal of forms of identification or threatening of family members. Some victims distrust police; for some victims, police in their native countries may have returned them to the traffickers, potentially leading to severe repercussions from the trafficker. Victims with such experiences or beliefs may mistrust Canadian authorities, as well. Victims may have language barriers or may be unaware of their legal rights. The Timmins Police Service, in partnership with Victim’s Services, urges all citizens to make themselves aware and report any suspicious activity linked to probable cases of Human Trafficking.

The Timmins Police acknowledge and recognize January 8th ad International Literacy Day. Literacy is not just about educating people, it is a unique and powerful tool to eradicate poverty and essential towards any form of social and human progress. International Literacy Day was first designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1967,... as an annual awareness day that marks the importance of literacy in all countries and cultures. International Literacy Day 2021 will focus on literacy, education, and learning during the particularly challenging times linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Timmins Police wish to acknowledge all educators today for their tireless efforts in regard to eradicating illiteracy in our communities. This means that this year, this day is more relevant than ever as teachers must be creative in order to meet the expanded challenges that COVID-19 has posed in the classroom. Over 775 million adults struggle with basic literacy and two-thirds of this figure are made up of women. Acknowledging International Literacy Day (ILD) is a positive way to raise awareness of the value of literacy and to encourage children and adults alike to develop their literacy skills. The Timmins Police is fully aware that hundreds of schools are still closed in the province of Ontario in order to address the growing Covid 19 concerns. Still, it is important to recognize the benefits of literacy and the steadfast efforts of educators in our area.

The Timmins Police Service is issuing a public safety advisory in relation to a possible fraudulent phone fraud campaign made by persons falsely representing local utility providers or home heating maintenance crews. The Timmins Police is in receipt of a complaint alleging a phishing phone fraud campaign that appears to be underway in the Timmins area. According to the nature of the complaint, unsolicited calls are received where the caller holds himself out to be a represent...ative of a local service provider and makes false claims about being able to complete furnace maintenance. These fraudsters are convincing and insistent that your home heating equipment may fail if they are not allowed to attend your residence to provide some measure of maintenance. Residents are reminded that this campaign is likely fraudulent in nature. While regular maintenance of home heating devices is certainly recommended, random solicitations may very well be from unaccredited, uncertified, or otherwise fraudulent operators who are preying on consumer fear or naivete. Details about any such calls should be forwarded directly to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or at https://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index-eng.htm Should anyone receive such a call, the Timmins Police Service recommends simply hanging up and contacting your preferred service utility provider by phone or online to make necessary repairs or complete necessary maintenance.

The Timmins Police Service is issuing a list of tips for ghosts and goblins and their parents as well so that everyone can have a blood curdling but safe Halloween night. All self-respecting zombies will likely grunt at you to remind you of the safe door to door trick or treating tips. 1. Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.... 2. Look left, right, and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross. 3. Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street. 4. Children should make an effort to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them. 5. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should map out their routes ahead of time, choosing the trek with the fewest street crossings. 6. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Children should never dart out into the street or cross between parked vehicles. 7. Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups. 8. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers. If possible, choose light colors for costumes. 9. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. 10. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. 11. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. Werewolves behind the wheel are reminded to 1) Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways. 2) Take the extra time to look for kids at intersections and on curbs. 3) Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully. 4) Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. 5) Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic, and turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances. 6) Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.

The Timmins Police is issuing a Traffic Advisory in light of a number of close calls that persist in occurring at the intersection of Hwy 101 and Kamiskotia Road in the west end of the city. Based on complaints received, it appears that drivers who are approaching the intersection from either direction while on Hwy 101 are electing to overtake traffic slowing to turn left by passing these vehicles on the right by using the right turn lanes that exist to facilitate right tur...ns. These right turn lanes at this intersection, as their name would clearly indicate, are in place expressly to allow for traffic to complete: - a right turn onto Kamiskotia Road if approaching from the east or -a right turn onto Government Road if approaching from the west. These lanes are not to be used to facilitate the overtaking of traffic on the right. Additionally, in certain cases, drivers have opted to leave the roadway to complete the passing of stopped traffic on the right. This practice is in direct contravention of section 150(2) of the Highway Traffic Act as outlined below Section 150(2) No driver of a motor vehicle shall overtake and pass another vehicle by driving off the roadway. This intersection and its intended safe usage will be scrutinized by the Timmins Police Service in the course of their patrols to enhance roadway safety in this area. Those motorists found to be in violation will have their driving behavior addressed in a firm but fair manner by the Timmins Police.
