It’s #FirePreventionWeek! National parks have grappled with fire for over 100 years. Once considered a destructive force, fire was extinguished as quickly as po...ssible. Park Wardens hired in the early 1900s were primarily charged with putting out fires. By studying the ecology and the science behind fires, our views have changed. Where fires were once viewed as purely destructive, scientists have learned that fire is essential to many natural landscapes. It helps plants regenerate, creates habitat for numerous species and improves diversity so that natural areas are stronger and more resilient. Back in June, a wildfire near Fitzsimmons Mountain burned vegetation off a large rock outcrop but it doesn’t take long for recovery to begin. For example, here are before-and-after images of one section of this area , now filled with a brand new crop of blueberries. Nature always finds a way!

Welcome Back Five-lined Skinks! Back in 2013, Thousand Islands National Park restored several rock barrens for the at risk Five-lined Skink, Ontario’s only native lizard species! Five-lined Skinks are known to use loose rocks on barrens for warmth, food, to avoid predators and even laying their eggs. At the restoration site, rocks had been removed from the barren to make fire pits, inuksuks, and flag pole cairns. This resulted in the loss of habitat for skinks. This year, Pa...rks Canada staff confirmed that Five-lined Skinks have returned to the restored areas in Thousand Islands National Park! Even a rock can be home to sensitive species. Please leave rocks in their place. #RARE #leavenotrace https://www.pc.gc.ca//pn-/on/1000/nature/conservation/rare

The use of generators (including inboard and stand-alone generators, and boat engines) is not permitted at Thousand Islands National Park mooring buoys or island docks, with the exception of McDonald, Beau Rivage and Central Grenadier Islands between 8am and 10pm. Please help everyone enjoy nature’s soundtrack that features loon calls, buzzing insects and lapping waves.

On #WorldW...aterMonitoringDay, show some love by discovering how these wetlands are essential ecosystems http://ow.ly/qRhV50wdzeC Photo taken in Riding Mountain National Park

The Residential School System is a tragedy born from colonial policies and has had negative effects on generations of Indigenous peoples. Today, the Minister o...f Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Jonathan Wilkinson, recognized the national historic significance of the Residential School System as a tragic and defining event in Canadian history. Also announced today is the designation of two former residential school sites as national historic sites: the former Portage La Prairie Indian Residential School in Manitoba; and the former Shubenacadie Indian Residential School in Nova Scotia. Some things change, and some things don’t! This pamphlet from 1908 is selling a cruise that is very popular to this day. The main difference is the cost, as a single ticket then would have been around 50!
