I just want to make mention of a traditional artists Way, My Teacher, Danny Dennis Beginning with having seen several new carvers copying Danny s hummingbird design..progressing closer and closer to the exact replica.. since he died. I Thought it may be worthwhile to share the origin of it.... That being said- as artists , we all , everyone of us play our part in the chain that is our cultural art. It does evolve. In this way its kindv cool his design made its contribution and lives on as an awsum fact and evidence of his being here. Its also good to know the genisis of some forms , those that just vanish or those that come into being. In this case the tear drop shape of the hummingbird feathers is the shape of actual hummingbirds feathers, works because it is half of an S form But we started drawing it as teardrops of volcano woman, in place of frogs, from his(Ganaaw da ) lineage story where hummingbird was perched in her hair. Jin being the alchemical character speaking for blood relations,recognising everyone by blood since the time they and mosquitos were both much bigger hunters. Retailers have said to me only tell the part of the story that makes it sound like hummingbird is the symbol of marriage or good luck. Retailers used to have influence on our art market and in a way still do with artists that are less traditional. I wanted to share that Dannys hummingbird started from a particular Celtic flower pattern on a very old argillite platter. That is where we got the teardrop shape from. Our art being so similar with the celtic type lines, it was a natural progression on Dannys part to assimilate it into his own unique style. Together we have grown up this style and form of feather since 1982 The flowers he did in metal or in print are either morning glories ( a loved ones favorite flower) or wild roses. I mainly do fireweed, ( a relative clan) or hibiscus for volcano woman Danny began carving in the Pen with ivory doing scrimshaw first and Junior( Louie Weden) argillite carver - was the one who got Danny interested in Traditional art ,although he was primarily selftaught. Dannys grandmother Elsie Dennis who lived to over 112 years old told us that in her time no one would dare take a part of another persons story..yet we see all the time random people serving up to the Art Market any old stories they may not have a right to or even a connection with. Danny was an original and prolific artist whos last years of works were taken unpaid for and mass produced and are still being marketed long past his own passing. So there you have the origin of that somewhat untraditional feather pattern. & I have a saying that goes if you must copy someone elses work.. please only bother if you can do it one better!

Just found out my friend Junior is gone. one of the coolest argillite carvers ever . he made all my first tools i still use everyday over 30 years later. RIP
