In celebration of #InternationalWomensDay a self-portrait of Mary Knowles (1733-1807), a poet, an intellectual, an early advocate of female education, an abolitionist and (for our interest) a master #needlework artist. She refined the technique that came to be known as 'needle-painting' where stitches were used to imitate brushstrokes in paintings. For her skills, she received a royal commission to create a portrait of George III in 1771. The final product was much to the s...atisfaction to the King and Queen, and Knowles was rewarded handsomely, in monetary terms and also in friendship with the royal family. This self-portrait depicting her working on the royal portrait was probably commissioned by Queen Charlotte eight year later as a recognition of this tie. This work is now part of the Royal Collection Trust and was put on display in Vancouver, Canada during 'Portrait of the Artist' exhibition at Vancouver Art Gallery in late 2017.
