It’s official, Canada’s prime rate will fall to 2.45% following the Bank of Canada’s emergency rate cut on Friday. The change will again affect all existing floating mortgage rates, as well as lines of credit and home equity lines of credit.

The Bank of Canada is cutting its key interest target by half a percentage point to 0.25 per cent in an unscheduled rate announcement. The central bank says this decision is aimed at cushioning the economic shocks from COVID-19 and a sharp drop in oil prices by easing the cost of borrowing. It adds that providing credit in the economy for businesses that need it should help lay the foundation for the economy's return to normalcy.... We'll let you know if/when lenders decide to follow suit and lower their prime rates, which would reduce the payments of their variable rate customers.
