#RememberanceDay Oliver Milton Martin was a Mohawk man from Six Nations who became the first Indigenous brigadier in Canada and later in life, the first Indigen...ous magistrate in Ontario. Before serving in the First World War, he was a teacher in Toronto. He began serving the military in 1909 as a bugler. In 1916 he became a Lieutenant with the 114th Infantry Battalion which included members from the Six Nations reserve as well as from other reserves across Canada. During WWI he was posted in England, France and Belgium, where he survived a gas attack. In 1918 he became a pilot for the Royal Flying Corps. During the interwar period, he returned to teaching in Toronto and soon became a principal. At the start of WWII, he returned to serve, this time training soldiers. He was promoted to colonel and then to brigadier, the highest rank any indigenous soldier has ever earned. In 1944 he retired at the age of 51 and returned to Toronto and became appointed the provincial magistrate for the York, Halton and Peel region, becoming the first Indigenous person to hold a judicial post in Ontario. Today we remember him and all veterans who have fought for our country. #LestWeForget : Library and Archives Canada

Orange Shirt Day - Every Child Matters Imagine being ripped away from your family as a child, never experiencing love on a daily basis. Imagine being a parent who choses to not share traditional knowledge and language in order to protect your children from harm. Listening is integral to this whole process...hear the words of Louise Longclaws.

In August 2018, CCI began the conservation treatment of a delta-winged test vehicle that had been recovered from Lake Ontario under an archaeological permit. Th...e recovery project was led by the OEX Recovery Group Incorporated for the Canada Aviation and Space Museum and the National Air Force Museum of Canada. The conservation treatment was multidisciplinary, involving Archaeological Conservators Tara Grant and Kate Sullivan, Metals Conservator Monique Benoit and Conservation Scientist Nancy Binnie. As part of the documentation, Senior Scientific Documentation Technologist Mylène Choquette put together two short videos showing the overhead and side views of the telemetry board. Due to its size, the telemetry board was X-rayed in two separate sections (left and right). The two radiographs were then digitally stitched together to show the object in its entirety. The same view was photographed under normal light, in a single shot. The two imaging techniques were superimposed one over the other in Adobe Photoshop. This slow transition from normal light photography to radiography provides a better understanding of the components and circuits. In addition, scientific Documentation Technologist Germain Wiseman produced a time-lapse video that showcases the treatment, which began with cleaning on August 13, 2018, and ended with paint consolidation on March 28, 2019. Two GoPro HERO6 cameras mounted above the delta test vehicle captured an image every 30 seconds. The cameras ran 24 hours a day, producing nearly 660,000 still images.

Orange Shirt Day - Every Child Matters Imagine being a child and growing up hating the colour of your skin?

Timmins Martelle Heritage Consultants Inc. 25.08.2020

Today is Orange Shirt Day, a day we acknowledge and remember the devastating legacy of Residential Schools on Indigenous people, their families and their communities. While we can all name the day, wear the shirts and make a call out on Facebook, the only way to fully grasp what this day means is to listen to the stories of survivors, understand and acknowledge their pain. Use the day to do more than acknowledge, join the efforts of reconciliation and find a way to help th...e healing. http://www.trc.ca/ https://woodlandculturalcentre.ca/the-campaign/

More plaques! Also, just a reminder: Peter Street and Russell Street here in Windsor are his namesakes, too.

I am calling for Jarvis Street, named for a slaveholding family in early York, to be renamed after the Blackburns. Thornton and Lucie fled Kentucky slavery and ...started Toronto's first taxi business. They contributed to the antislavery cause, and helped many freedom-seekers start new lives. It was courageous, hard-working people like the Blackburns who helped built Toronto as we know it today. Their story is told in my book, "I've Got a Home in Glory Land: A Lost Tale of the Underground Railroad," published in 2007 See more

170 years ago today, this legislation, which made it much more dangerous for formerly enslaved people to remain in the northern United States, was passed. It le...d to a major increase in Underground Railroad journeys to Canada and propelled many free people of colour to emigrate, too. In places like Windsor, Sandwich, or other points in Essex County, the Black population grew exponentially. Here’s what Natasha Henry has written about the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. See more

We are pleased to announce Brandon Doxtator is speaking on Zoom Sunday Sept 13th at 3pm as part of London Regional Social Forum. His talk is called: "Challenge...s and solutions to addressing long term boil water advisories in Indigenous Communities- addressing water infrastructure issues on the Oneida Nation of the Thames." RSVP to https://londonregionsocialforum.wildapricot.org/ The Oneida Nation of the Thames is a Haudenosaunee community located 25km outside of London ON. Water testing has identified that due to infrastructure issues, the community does not meet the standards set out by either the federal or provincial drinking water guidelines since 2006. Since september 2019, Oneida has been on an official long term boil water advisory (LTBWA) as determined by the federal government. This presentation will look at the facts behind LTBWA's, the roadblocks to getting on that list and solutions to addressing water issues locally and nation-wide. Brandon Doxtator is a 25 year old bear clan member from the Oneida Nation of the Thames. Brandon currently sits on the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians (AIAI) Youth Council, and is employed by the Oneida Nation of the Thames as the Environment and Consultation Coordinator and for the Carolinian Canada Coalition as an Indigenous Leadership Coordinator. Brandon sits on the newly formed Onyota'a:ka Kahsatsta^'sla' Ltd. (OK Ltd.) Board, which is dedicated to providing long-term sustainable energy solutions for the Oneida Nation. In 2016, Brandon served a two year term as an Elected Councillor for the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and ever since has been passionate about working with youth, and protecting and enhancing critical habitat within Southwestern Ontario. Through his school, personal and work experience, Brandon works closely with his nation on various issues including archaeology, environmental stewardship, and consultation practices and protocols.
