ANNOUNCEMENT / Toronto Contemporary Syndicate is proud to introduce you one of its three co-directors, René Blouin Born near Quebec City, René Blouin has been at the forefront of the Canadian contemporary art scene for the last 50 years. After his studies in 1972, Blouin helped to found Vehicule Art, one the first artist-run galleries in Canada. In 1975, Blouin was recruited by the Canada Council for the Arts where he occupied different postings until 1983 when he left the ...position of Assistant Head of Visual Arts to become a curator at Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. In 1984, he was a regular animator in the Visual Arts Program at the Banff Art Center. In 1986, after co-curating Aurora Borealis, one of the largest contemporary Canadian art exhibition ever mounted, he opened his own gallery in the Belgo Building in downtown Montreal. The building has since become a focal point in the Montreal art scene. In addition to his work as a gallerist, Blouin has served on various cultural organizations boards, notably at the Saidye Bronfman Centre, Concordia University Visual Arts Department and the Hnatyshyn Foundation. In 2017, Blouin received the Order of Canada for his accomplishments and unwavering support for contemporary Canadian art.
