Posted @withregram @districtoftofino What with the big tent?? Starting next week we’ll be welcoming the residents of #tofino to The Skatelot, a new, temporary, synthetic ice skating recreational facility. Stay tuned for updates as we get ready to launch with details about how to register for a program, COVID-19 safety guidelines and more. But in the meantime, here are the answers to your burning questions about the giant tent in the RV lot next to the Municipal Hall and w...hat’s going under it. Synthetic?? So what is the ice made out of? The rink surface is made out of a flexible polymer plastic. Synthetic ice rinks have been around for decades and are sometimes used where frozen ice surfaces are impractical due to temperatures making natural ice impossible. Synthetic ice rinks are also used as an alternative to artificial ice rinks due to the overall cost, not requiring any refrigeration equipment. Can you use ice skates on it? Yes! You can certainly use your own skates on the rink, however, due to current COVID-19 safety guidelines, you will still need to register for a program or public skating through PerfectMind, Tofino Recreation Department’s online registration program, once it goes live. What about me, I don’t have ice skates? No skates? No problem! The synthetic rink comes equipped with a full community set of skates that will be disinfected between users. It also comes with a skate sharpener to keep everyone’s skates nice and sharp. What will it be like to skate on? You can skate and turn and stop on it like you would regular ice. The polymer surface may require that ice skates are sharpened a little more often. Stay tuned for announcements early next week.

Due to the new Provincial Health Orders regarding fitness and recreation centres, recreations programs at the community hall are temporarily on hold. Once new guidance is received from the Province, the District of Tofino will review all safety plans (including mask requirements) for recreation programming. https://mailchi.mp//pausing-community-hall-recreation-prog
