Here we grow again: Job Posting 2021-01-08 Full Time (Contract 3 years) Deadline to apply- January 15, 2021, 11:59 PM Side By Side Family Centre (SBSFC) is a no...n-profit organization based in the Durham Region that provides a space for members of the Black community and other racialized and diverse groups to engage in programming that empowers their lives. Our mission is achieved through culturally focused programs that empower and strengthen families. Position Title: Student Advocate (SA) The Student Advocate will deliver highly targeted, community-based, and culturally relevant advocacy supports tailored to Black students' and families' experiences and needs. The SA will use culturally relevant and responsive approaches to build and maintain trust-based relationships with participating Black students and families. SA will work directly with participants to develop individualized and actionable strategies to overcome the barriers they face in navigating school processes and systems. Responsibilities: The Student Advocate on behalf of Black students and families within public school systems. Activities that the applicant may undertake to achieve this primary function may include, but are not limited to: Initiate or attend meetings with teachers, guidance counsellors, and administrators to discuss student progress and negotiate for needed support on behalf of students/families. Ensure participants have input into decisions and processes that directly or significantly impact them (e.g., disciplinary meetings; return-to-school processes). Provide navigational supports and work with Black students and families to identify their needs, aspirations, and goals, and implement culturally relevant and actionable plans to help Black students and families respond effectively to barriers to success, pursue opportunities, and self-advocate. Advocate on behalf of participants and assist in accessing resources and skills development/training to build capacity to self-advocate (e.g., supporting parents to create strategies to navigate communication with school administration) and promote positive dialogue across participants, educators, schools, and communities. Leverage cross-sector connections, networks, and expertise to refer participants to a tailored suite of services, supports and opportunities that will help them achieve their educational, career, life goals (age-appropriate experiential learning opportunities, rites of passage programs, tutor/coaching, scholarship/leadership opportunities, job placements). Act as a resource for local schools/school boards to help build awareness of and address barriers identified by participating students, their families, and their communities. Provide leadership, advice, consultation and supports to schools/school boards on anti-Black racism, systemic barriers and how to activate positive changes for Black students and their families. Provide Community Collaboration and Systems Advocacy- In collaboration with community partners, participants, and schools, SA will help amplify Black students' and families' voices and experiences to activate education systems changes. Create and disseminate accessible and culturally relevant research-based resources. Qualifications: Bachelor of social work degree from an accredited university or equivalent and registered with a professional college. Self-identify as someone from the Black community and preferably lives in the Durham Region. In-depth knowledge of the education system and the systematic challenges faced by racialized families. Knowledge of the Ontario Education Act 3-5 years of experience working with Black children, youth, and families. Ability to work with data and develop systems to collect data and stories. Proficiency in various computer programs (such as Microsoft Office) and social media platforms Strong community development background Experience in workshop development and facilitation. In-depth understanding of anti-racism and anti-oppression, anti-Black racism, and equity principles Valid Ontario driver's license Able to affirm and integrate the mission and vision of Side by Side Family Center Additional Skills: Strong advocacy skills Excellent time management skills Excellent writing skills with the ability to communicate effective and clearly. Extremely detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills Self-motivated, flexible, and responsive to young people and families Ability to work collaboratively and independently. Skilled in crisis intervention and conflict resolution Experienced in addressing compassionate matters and maintaining the confidentiality. Police Criminal reference check with vulnerable sector screening required.
