Always keep your business finances separate from your personal finances. Don't give the tax auditor a reason to audit both. Learn to pay yourself first and run your business on the remaining cash. Setup an automatic payment to your personal account twice a month (1st & 15th or 10th & 25th) like a regular pay cheque. Call Tom Galbraith Accountants for more information at: 905-988-3755

TAX TIP #17: I'm self-employed, so what can I right-off? You're allowed to claim reasonable business expenses incurred to earn your income if you work for yourself. However, the key word is reasonable. If you only have one internet connection and work at home, the CRA will expect there to be some personal use so you cannot claim 100 per cent of expenses. And if you are claiming 90 per cent of your auto expenses, the CRA will most likely ask to review your logbook....
