Today we remember. We remember not that wars are great, but we remember that in these wars sacrifices were made to enable us to live a life of freedom. We honour those brave people that marched to battle not knowing if they’d ever return to their families or their country. Many of us have had our families touched in some way by the wars of the past in the hope that there would be no more wars in the future. Today we remember. #lestweforget

: Have you been told to eat less and exercise more to lose weight with PCOS? OR, you should stick to 1000 calories pe...r day? OR, PCOS patients should limit their carbohydrate intake because they are at a higher risk for developing insulin resistance, Type 2 Diabetes or Gestational Diabetes? OR, you should eat two fruits per day max and avoid nuts, seeds and legumes if you want to lose weight? Well, I am here to help clear out this misinformation. 1) Pulses (including split-peas, dry beans, lentils & chickpeas) were more effective in improving cardio metabolic disease risk factors in womxn with PCOS than TLC (therapeutic Lifestyle Diet, which focuses on low fat, lean meats). These risk modifications include lowering postprandial blood glucose, total insulin, total lipid profile (including LDL (aka bad cholesterol) & blood pressure readings). This is due to the high fiber and complex carbohydrates with low GI (glycemic index) found in these legumes PMID: 30274344 2) Natural antioxidants found in high concentrations in fruits and vegetables are found to be effective in improving fertility issues related to oxidative stress seen in womxn with PCOS& endometriosis while reducing risk of developing Gestational Diabetes, pre-eclampsia, spontaneous abortions & miscarriages as well as pre-term labour. PMID: 32935256 3) Another randomized controlled trial compared the effectiveness of 5 different therapeutic diets for weight loss in overweight people. Its important to note that they all had low fat, low glycemic index pattern in common) including: Vegan, Vegetarian, Peso-vegetarian, Semi-vegetarian, or omnivorous. The results showed a bigger overall weight reduction and total saturated fat composition in the vegan group compared to other categories. PMID: 25592014 So, why am I sharing this with you? Because I want you to know that while well-intentioned, your doctor may be following outdated guidelines when it comes to nutrition in PCOS . I want you to be empowered, so you can make a well-informed decision about your health. AND, you dont have to do this alone ! See more

: Womxn with PCOS have a greater risk of developing several chronic health conditions, including some life-threatening di...seases including: & - More than 50 percent of womxn with PCOS will have diabetes or pre-diabetes (impaired glucose tolerance) before they turn 40! - The risk of heart attack is 4 to 7 times higher in people with PCOS than those of the same age without PCOS. - PCOS patients are at greater risk of having high blood pressure. - People with PCOS have higher levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol & triglycerides, and low levels of HDL (good) cholesterol. - Womxn with PCOS can develop sleep apnea. This is when breathing stops for short periods of time during sleep, and leads to many chronic health issues down the road. This rate is specially higher in those with bigger waist to hip ratio. - PCOS patients may also suffer from anxiety and depression, and are more at risk of suicidal ideations. If this resonates with you, please reach out privately, and I would be more than happy to connect you to useful resources/ help. - Womxn with PCOS are at higher risk due to their infrequent & irregular periods due to lack of ovulation $ progesterone deficiency, which is the hormone that allows for shedding of endometrium (uterus lining). Over time, if left unresolved, this can lead to endometrial hyperplasia, and eventually cancer. This is why its important to get to your period health back on track! I truly believe information is empowering: the more you know about your potential health risks, the more actively you can take preventative measures to take charge of your health. Best part is they are PCOS educated health practitioners who would love to help you out ! Just reach out, and lets get you on that holistic healing train. See more

: & ? September is # , which is a condition near and dear to my heart , so I am going to be... sharing information, research, and resources about this condition based on what I have learned and what I have seen in practice over the upcoming weeks. , ? PCOS stands for polycystic ovarian syndrome, which is a very misleading name since many people do not have cysts in their ovaries despite having other signs and symptoms of this condition. While, the cause is still unknown for this complex condition, we see an interplay of hormonal imbalance (no or very few and irregular periods) metabolic issues (insulin resistance, diabetes, high cholesterol & weight gain), and mental health concerns (insomnia, anxiety & depression). ? It is estimated that about 10 million womxn are affected with this condition worldwide, but I think due to the complexity of this condition and lack of access to proper medical evaluation, this number is an underestimation. ? Sadly, it takes PCOS patients an average of 3 doctors to be diagnosed....! Partly because this complex condition may mimic other conditions, as it affects all aspects of ones health (physical, mental and emotional), and partly due to lack of funding for research in this field. Currently, clinicians use the to assess and diagnose PCOS, which requires the presence of two of the following three for official diagnosis: Oligo/anovulation- few or no ovulation Hyperandrogenism- either high testosterone lab values OR physical appearance of high testosterone (hirsutism (excess facial and body hair), acne & hair loss) Presence of cyst(s) in the ovaries Next time, I will be delving into various signs, symptoms and labs that I look for and run for my patients who I am suspecting of having PCOS. If you have PCOS, or if you are just curious and have specific questions on this topic that would like answered, please reach out privately . Until next time, Dr. E Credit: Colours of Life Photography See more

"The last few months have been a roller coaster of emotion for me, as I am sure they have been for many of you reading this. I have felt unbounded joy, deep sadness, a weight that has felt almost unbearable at times, outraged and unconditionally loved. Through all of this I have grounded myself through a practice of gratitude. I have grown through my practice of patience and forgiveness for others as well as for myself. I have re-ignited my relationship with nature. Rediscovered the expansive freedom that is experienced through movement and breath. Rooted myself through meditation and empathy. And have reminded myself every day to make space to laugh and to play without boundaries or fear of judgment. Sending love and compassion to all" - Lisa McReynolds, RMT

"During these uncertain times, recognizing and appreciating the positives in life has become more important than ever. While our current situation has spawned a unique set of challenges, it has also awarded me the rare opportunity to extend my focus beyond the field of massage therapy and into other passions and interests I have. Ive been fortunate enough to use this time to broaden my cooking skills, re-connect with nature, and rekindle my love of music and piano. Most importantly, I have had the opportunity to connect with my friends and family in a different yet deeply fulfilling way. That being said, Im grateful to be returning to work in the very near future! -Rei Fortier, RMT

The current situation has forced an inner reflection and re-evaluation of my old cemented ways. I had to reconnect with my roots (Sdipa, Music, Dance and Yoga) and be grateful for my blessings. I am learning what it means to nurture myself and my loved ones. We are all connected and divinely gifted. Its with those gifts, we can heal ourselves and mother nature. -Dinyar Mistry

With the governments recent announcements of a phased approach to the BC Restart plan, we wanted to reach out to all our patients with some more information about our forthcoming re-opening of our physical clinic at Tonume Integrated Health, and the many changes that will accompany it. The Tonume team is very excited to reopen our doors and provide the range of vital healthcare services that you have come to trust. At the same time, we want to reassure you that the safety of... our patients, staff and practitioners is our first priority. Presently, all regulated healthcare professionals governing bodies are preparing and submitting their safe return-to-work proposals to Dr Bonnie Henry, the Provincial Health Officer for review. These plans will be evaluated to ensure strict compliance with provincial mandated safety protocol. Once plans have been approved, we expect to receive the authorization to reopen. More information on reopening, including details concerning our safety measures, will be communicated as we receive directives from the Provincial Health Officer. Please continue to check our website, Facebook and Instagram pages for updates. We look forward to seeing you all very soon. Until then, stay safe and healthy.

While this has been a tough time for everyone, the silver lining in all of this is seeing what we can accomplish when we all work together and do our part. When I go for a run through the park everyone ensures we keep a 6-foot radius, and zoom parties have become the new Friday night ritual. Because of everyones dedication to flattening the curve, BC is far ahead of the game and planning our reopening. Thanks to your efforts, I can look forward to seeing you at Tonume very soon. Thank you -Dr. Matthew Nagra, ND
