"While the jury is out on giftedness being innate and other factors potentially making the difference, what is certain is that the behaviours associated with high levels of performance are replicable and most can be taught even traits such as curiosity."

Food for thought. From the article: "The artist, if true to his or her vocation, recovers the past and explains the present. The artist is the true chronicler of who we were and where we came from. Culture, in times of distress, is not a luxury but a life raft."

"Young peoples brains arent experiencing a backward evolution. Their ability to articulate points of rhythm, melody and the flow of words in musical genres they have made or developed themselves prove that, as human beings, our urge for musical expression and facility lies deep. Young people are not afraid of things that need to be worked through. Complexity, curiosity and adventure is the new counter-culture. For decades, the debate about the arts has boiled down to a drea...ry see-saw between is it elitist? and is it dumbed down? But this new audience of people who love the discovery of the new and the complex simply refuse to see their passions in such binary terms. I believe were heading towards a boundary-less age of music, where newer generations happily skate between classical and electronic, rock and pop, jazz and world music. With one bound, they have broken free from the constraints my generation placed upon itself. All they ask in return is authenticity of intention and execution." See more

How can we ensure that artists are fairly compensated for the contributions they make to our province? Stunning piece on Leonard Cohen and a good reminder for all of us at this time --- to look at what we can be grateful for even when enveloped in darkness- Di...d anything inspire you to create Hallelujah? Later that same winter day the reply arrived: I wanted to stand with those who clearly see G-ds holy broken world for what it is, and still find the courage or the heart to praise it. You dont always get what you want. Youre not always up for the challenge. But in this case it was given to me. For which I am deeply grateful. "Leonard was, above all, in his music and in his poems and in his tone of life, the lyrical advocate of the finite and the flawed. As he wrote to my son, who was mercifully too young to understand, he was possessed by a lasting sensation of brokenness. He was broken, love was broken, the world was broken."

"Unlike commercial brain training products, which only improve performance on the skills involved, musical training has what psychologists refer to as transfer effects in other words, learning to play a musical instrument seems to have a far broader effect on the brain and mental function, and improves other abilities that are seemingly unrelated. Music reaches parts of the brain that other things cant, says Loveday. Its a strong cognitive stimulus that grows the brai...n in a way that nothing else does, and the evidence that musical training enhances things like working memory and language is very robust. Learning to play a musical instrument, then, seems to be one of the most effective forms of brain training there is. Musical training can induce various structural and functional changes in the brain, depending on which instrument is being learned, and the intensity of the training regime."

Private music lessons have an important role to play, and we at Top Music Teachers are proud to be contributing to the advancement of quality music education by making private lessons more convenient and affordable. This said, if we are to construct a better society, public music education needs to be seriously supported, funded and respected as an essential skill. There is no substitute for public music education and to the benefits it can bring. "British soul singer Laura ...Mvula has warned that a generation of young people will see TV programmes such as The X Factor and The Voice as the only way into a career in music because of cuts to creative subjects in schools. Mvula, 30, who worked as a music supply teacher before becoming an award-winning singer-songwriter, said music had been cast off to the bottom of the curriculum and risked becoming the preserve of the wealthy who could afford private lessons. She said many of the opportunities she had as a student, such as free music lessons, were no longer available. I was surrounded by teachers and resources that made me feel there were no limits, she said. There wasnt anything that was off-limits to me because of money or because of who I am or where I come from. You want to play violin, then play violin, you want to study composition at a conservatoire, take up a scholarship there. We lived in a culture of freedom and availability. She added: Without that they dont have anything to stimulate their own musical growth its only available to the privileged few who can afford private lessons. Read more at: http://bit.ly/2d6Vw5r
