Here we see Dizzy Gillespie speaking about his time working with Chano Pozo, who played an enormous role in Gillespie's musical development. Their hit song "Manteca" is widely considered the first Jazz Standard to be rhythmically based on the clave! Decades later Bobby Parker wrote his own hit song, "Watch Your Step", based on "Manteca", and according to John Lennon this tune was the inspiration for Beatles hits "I Feel Fine" and "Day Tripper". It's incredible the way music... is able to tie together histories and times, from Dizzy and Chano in 1920's North Carolina and Havana, to John Lennon and The Beatles' Liverpool! There are so many elements of music to be shared! So much history and culture entangled in the sounds of the songs we love! While Chano Pozo passed away at a young age, and we haven't been able to find interviews of his to learn more of his own influences and inspirations, we're lucky to have this footage of Dizzy Gillespie enthusiastically sharing his musical memories of their time together!
