End of week Autumn Colours Toronto Botanical Garden
Spotted jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) is a common native wildflower. Just finishing up flowering and setting seed, you may have noticed their bright showy orange flowers in moist areas, as our ecologist Katherine encountered during riparian and wetland surveys of Wilket Creek ravine. Its common name "jewelweed" is thought to come from the beading of water on its leaves which sparkle like jewels. Also known as "touch-me-not", its seed capsules explode upon touch, a unique dispersal method called "explosive dehiscence". Jewelweed is a favourite among hummingbirds and bees, like a ruby-throated hummingbird spotted feeding on jewelweed at TBG the other week."
