Toronto Interpreters Practice Group 08.11.2020

Overused expression of the month: silver lining. At TIP, It rather feels like we’ve been surfing on a cloud of unprecedented practice bliss all month long. No, Zoom is not the be all and end all of videoconferencing platforms. But it allowed us to connect conference interpreters speaking six different languages, from New Brunswick to Istanbul. No, this does not replace #RSI, or even less so in person #interpreting. But with a bit of creative workaround and making every ef...fort to optimize sound and image quality, we sustained our practice, while becoming increasingly conversant in the remote world. My gratefulness list keeps growing. Thank you to first timers for jumping in with speeches and providing relay from day one. Thank you to other speech makers Jose Maria Silva Umbria, Amy Jendrek and Rony Gao for volunteering such high quality material. You keep raising the bar - speeches uploaded on our YouTube channel. Thank you to each and every one of you for spending Saturday morning (or evening!) with us. If you’re curious, join our community of conference interpreters and students at our next practice on May 9th, 11 am - 2 pm EST. Topic: Health and Wellness. Stay safe. Stay well. Until next time!

TIPtensive is on tomorrow, 11 am - 3 pm EST! Stay for the entire marathon, or pick your own adventure. 4 hours of practice and discussion, 5 speeches, 7 languages, 18 motivated interpreters (so far). ***We recommend that you take breaks and maybe sit out one of the speeches to let your eyes/brain rest.*** If you're a conference interpreter looking to get some practice in, ask to join our private group TIP Monthly Practice on Facebook, or email us at [email protected] Looking forward to a productive session!

What a resilient bunch we are. Thank you to all the determined interpreters who joined our April Online #TIP to get a bit of practice in. Our biggest and most international turn out so far since TIP’s humble beginnings in 2017! We managed to work in relay using a combination of Zoom/phones/Skype/WeChat, with colleagues joining from as far as Vancouver, Washington and Europe, in addition to our usual Toronto crew. It was great having first-timers give us a try, in addition to... welcoming back the likes of of Laura, Deepti and José. It was wonderful to see so many of our Spanish-speaking colleagues. We spoke about the importance of optimizing sound and video for distance interpreting, and experienced it live first-hand. It was a learning experience for all. Grateful to speakers, admins and participants. Thank you for your patience, help and contribution. There is something powerful about all coming together as a group, and putting our best foot forward. See you on April 25th, our second TIP of the month, for more Coronavirus-related practice. Stay safe, stay sane. Have a great week. #interpreting #RSI #multilingual #remoteinterpreting #distanceinterpreting #practicemakesperfect #French #Spanish #Russian #Portuguese #Mandarinchinese

First practice of the decade! The snowstorm we had yesterday did not stop these winter warriors. We recorded a ZH speech and an EN speech from yesterday’s session, they will be up on out YouTube channel shortly.
